When is the snake festival held?

Mumbai: It is called Processione Dei Serpari and goes by a variety of names, including Cocullo Snake Festival, Snake Charmer’s Festival or Festival of Saint Dominic, and takes place on the first Thursday of May.
According to Huffington Post, the festival is not about snakes, but is a commemoration of a local saint in the past who had got rid of the snakes in the village. A statue of Saint Domenico covered with live snakes is carried by the faithful during an annual procession on the streets of Cocullo, in the Abruzzo region in Italy.
To celebrate St. Dominic’s work, the village built a statue to honour him, which they parade around once a year and festival-goers can place money, jewels and snakes on the statue.

Big picture

Kolkata Knight Riders must be slightly relieved they are not facing Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur even though it is supposed to be a home game for the latter. Within a week of conceding the match to Royals after a Super Over in Abu Dhabi, Knight Riders are facing them again, this time in Ahmedabad, which was assigned as the new home for Royals because the Rajasthan Cricket Association reportedly failed to produce the clearances from state authorities.
Would Royals be bothered? Not likely. Unlike bigger teams, they are used to these background irritations. They had a torrid time last year but still managed to finish in the top four. This year, their performances seem no different; they have been efficient as usual. Ask 11 people to pick the top performers for Royals this season and there is a good chance that all of them would disagree with the rest. Royals have a decent record at Ahmedabad with three wins in four games.
With three consecutive losses, Knight Riders' form is closely mirroring the early-season batting woes of their captain Gautam Gambhir. Most of their problems boil down to the lack of oomph in their batting. In the last three matches, they just haven't stood up as a unit. A couple of batsmen have made 30s and 40s, but there has been practically no support from the others. Knight Riders' previous loss against Chennai Super Kings, in which, apart from two, no batsman even got into double-digits, was representative of the general malaise.
If ever there was a silver lining, it was probably the bat-swing of Yusuf Pathan, who managed to hit four sixes in Ranchi. Knight Riders need that sort of presence from more of their batsmen because Royals are again making all the right moves this season while staying below the radar.

The patchy form of Gautam Gambhir and Yusuf Pathan has no doubt hurt Knight Riders but Jacques Kallis' inability to hit out has meant the onus to increase the rate has been thrust on the team's second line of batsmen. With 26 runs in his last three innings, Kallis has been more of a burden in the top order. The regular presence of a Chris Lynn might have served the Knight Riders better. Still, Kallis did score a fifty in the first match. Just that he needs to do it more often to justify his tag as the leading allrounder.
The other night, Pravin Tambe's twin strikes robbed Delhi Daredevils of their momentum as he removed Quinton de Kock and Kevin Pietersen, both of whom were looking dangerous, in the same over. It was not the only time he struck big; he can proudly flaunt the wickets of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli among his nine scalps this season. The soft-spoken bowler has said that it's not the wickets that he goes after, but it's the runs he tries to curtail that bring him success. Not a regular last season, Tambe is quietly assuming the mantle of the most important Royals bowler.
Stats and trivia

  • 296 - Number of fours hit by Gautam Gambhir in the IPL, the most by any batsman. Gambhir is also on top of the list of batsmen with most 50-plus scores along with Chris Gayle, Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma
  • Shane Watson has more sixes - 89 - in the IPL than Gambhir and Jacques Kallis combined. Watson has only played 61 matches, while Gambhir and Kallis have featured in 94 and 96 matches respectively
  • For players who have scored more than 1000 IPL runs and are still playing, Kallis' strike rate, at 109.07, is the worst

Prabhat had come to Bhopal five days ago and was living with his friend Prakhar here, police said. The youth's family lives in Indore and his father Hukiram is a food inspector there.

Prakhar, also a MANIT pass out, had left for his office on the day of incident. When Prabhakar returned in evening, he found Prabhat hanging.

Prakhar said he was in touch with him through WhatsApp in the day and had no idea that he would commit suicide. On finding him hanging in his room, Prakhar initially thought it might be a joke or some kind of trick. After realizing Prabhat is dead, he brought him down after cutting the rope.

Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Priyanka Chopra and Sanjay Leela Bhansali to be Arrested?

A local court has issued arrest warrants against director-producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali, actors Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra, six months after the release of "Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela".
The order was issued on Friday in relation to a case, which alleged that a few scenes in the film hurt religious sentiments of a community.

Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) SP Singh ordered Mumbai Police Commissioner on Friday to arrest the actors and the director of the film, and produce them in court on 4 June, Press Trust of India reported.
Last year in November, advocate Sudhir Kumar Ojha had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the court, stating that a few scenes in the film hurt the religious sentiments of a community.
The arrest warrant was based on the PIL filed by Ojha. On 14 February, CJM took notice of the case and summoned the actors and the director. But since the actors and director did not turn up, CMJ issued arrest warrants against them.
"Ram-leela", starring Padukone and Singh in the lead, was released on 15 November worldwide. The film, directed by Bhansali, is a desi version of Shakespeare's classic "Romeo and Juliet".

The film landed in some controversy before its release last year. Members of Rajput community filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Gujarat High Court, stating that the film portrayed their community in a negative light.
During the promotion campaign of the film, Padukone had visited Ahmedabad to attend a garba function, where a group of people were waiting to throw eggs and tomatoes at her. However, the actress managed to escape public embarrassment at the event. [Read the full story here]
After drawing much anger from the Rajput community, the film faced trouble over its title as well. Delhi court had ordered to stop the release of the film, based on the complaints filed by petitioners, including a Hindu group.
The film, originally titled "Ram-leela", was released only after the title was changed to "Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela".

During a party for a British officer at the Nawab of Awadh’s residence, a particular kebab became the centre of attention. The officer loved the fine mince skewered kebabs and asked to see the chef. Complimenting him, he asked for the name of the kebabs so that he’d know what to ask for. “But the bawarchi had no idea; he’d just made up the recipe. The chef came from Kakori, a small town near Lucknow, and so the kebabs were given a name,” recounts Shahnawaz Qureshi, sous chef, Saffron, JW Marriot, on how the Kakori kebab originated.
Regaling me with Awadhi tales heard from his maternal grandfather, Qureshi plays the perfect host. But instead of serving up the famed Kakori kebab, he insists I try the gilawati kebab, literally meaning melt-in-the-mouth. Rather than skewered and barbequed on charcoal like the Kakori, these round kebabs are fried on the tawa. According to the menu, the lamb is ground to a velvety smooth texture, marinated and cooked in over 18 different spices. “Oh, that’s just what we write on the menu! We use a lot more spices; way too many to count,” says the chef, refusing to reveal his secret recipe.
One of the oldest and best-known eateries to serve gilawati kebabs in Lucknow’s Aminabad bazaar is Tunday Kababi. The restaurant, which has been around for about 100 years, gets its name from its owner. “He had a slightly disfigured arm so everyone called him tunday. The name stuck,” says Qureshi. The restaurant’s reputation is such that gilawati kebabs are often referred to as Tunday kebabs.
“Aminabad is one of the most popular food streets across the world,” says Qureshi, whose first job was at a restaurant in the area about 10 years ago. “I learnt the tricks of the trade at Arabiya restaurant, right opposite Tunday Kababi.” Qureshi has fond memories of eating mewe ki kheer, harey masale ka kheema, nalli nihari, and bhuna gosht in Aminabad.
Though Arabiya was Qureshi’s first stop in a professional kitchen, he had a head start in cooking. “It is a khandaani pesha (family profession),” claims Qureshi, whose paternal grandfather and father were both butchers. “Butchers are always fine cooks as well. They know exactly which section of the animal to use for a particular dish. nalli nihari, for instance, is made best with the meat just above the trotters.”
The first time Qureshi cooked, he ended up replicating the Hyderabadi kacche gosht ki biryani. “I was barely 17 and didn’t even know the dish existed! I made it by accident and my mother recognised what I’d created. That’s when she gave me all the cooking secrets her father had passed on to her, such as using jaiphal (nutmeg) in mutton biryani, or using spices such as khas ki jadh (dried vetiver roots) or the popular Lucknowi spice pipri to add a sourness to the kebabs.”
Food was always an integral part of his life. “I had two sisters and three brothers and all of us have a passion for food. If the handi (dish) of the day didn’t turn out well, it ruined everyone’s mood,” he laughs. Despite having worked at a number of five-star properties across the country, the nalli nihari his mother made is still his favourite. “The nihari was made of either beef or mutton, which was left to cook in a stock in the clay oven all night long. We would wake up with the aroma filling our home. It always made my day,” he says nostalgically. Although he now cooks nihari in refined oil to make it lighter, he admits that the best way is to cook it in mustard oil. “Heat the mustard oil in the pan, then add a little salt and water. That helps to soften the flavour,” is his tip.
We sample the chef’s special koh-e-Awadh instead. The incredible falling-off-the-bone lamb is served in delicious gravy. “The cuisine of Awadh has no use of tomatoes. The fruit was introduced much later,” he says.
During the course of our meal, I’ve sampled some of the best of his Awadhi starters, as well as his signature dal-e-khaas. However, I have a long way to go before I have sampled all of Awadh’s delicacies. So when Qureshi claims that the cuisine uses spices such as ajwain and saunf to aid digestion, making it summer-proof, he has inadvertently encouraged me to call on him again!
