Voices from Gaza: Survivors speak out

The ceasefire holds for now, but many in Gaza fear it will be broken unless the Palestinian factions' demands are met.



Gaza Strip - A month has passed since the Israeli offensive on Gaza began. Palestinians in the besieged territory are still tending their wounds after four weeks of war and destruction.
Israel said on Wednesday night that they are willing to extend the 72-hour ceasefire that took effect on Tuesday. However, this comes amid a general feeling among Gazans that the offensive could begin again tomorrow, since Hamas has announced that it has no intention of extending the current ceasefire so long as the Palestinian factions' conditions are not met.
Palestinians have demanded an end to the eight-year Israeli blockade of Gaza and the release of Palestinian prisoners, but Israel has resisted those demands.
Al Jazeera toured the north, central, and southern areas of the Gaza Strip to hear what people are saying about the offensive.

We were forced to leave our homes and seek shelter in an UNRWA school, as protection. But sadly, bullets of hatred chased us even into the schools where we thought we would be safe.It is only today we have been able to receive condolences. Our hearts are burned. We lost our loved ones which can't be estimated, at any price.
A month later, we have survived to tell the story of how our family members were slaughtered by Israeli tank shells. Civilians are looking for a life that is free of this harm.

Three minutes before the start of the 72-hour ceasefire, and rockets are still being fired on Israel. If it was about making us lose our children, I can assure Israel that all Gaza women are birth-giving by nature.
A month later, I stand on the ruins of these demolished homes and say, we won this war. What has Israel achieved? They killed children, women, and elders, but the resistance fighters remained untouched.
You kill one, we will bring 10. I stand now and say, Israel won the war over stones which it has destroyed, but the Palestinian resistance has beat all of Israel.

I never blame Hamas or our Palestinian resistance factions. The destruction we live in is caused by Israel on this ground and Arab silence on the other end.I am homeless today because my home was bombed. A war that struck civilians for a whole month can happen only because of the silence of Arab leaders.
It's a choice we have to make - either we die, or we live a dignified life.

As long as the resistance exists, this is, itself, a victory, and, Inshallah [God willing], in the coming period, the resistance will make victory tangible. A month later, I would like to tell Israel, which made the decision to start this war: As for this destruction, we will fix it.
As for this destruction, it's not necessarily us who will rebuild, but our sons will.
Israel has an agenda, but there is no justification for targeting a civilian population.

They want to end the last Middle East issue. But I can assure them, that we will remain resilient, and one martyr will bring forward 1,000 more, as the Palestinian people will not quit. I blame the Arab states for not standing by us. This war should not have happened. I feel all Arabs are conspiring against us, because they want to get rid of us, the Palestinian people.
I have lived here for 14 years, and I know God will compensate us for such damage.

He's [Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas] in agreement with Israel to maim people, so that he can politically cleanse the Islamist party in Gaza. Israel failed in this war. After all, killing civilians is not the way to go. Abu Mazen is a traitor who left us alone. [Egyptian president] El-Sisi has also been part of this war in order to bring Abu Mazen back to Gaza.
Thanks to God, Hamas achieved so much by its steadfastness. People were rushing here to buy bread during the war and we fear no war, like this one from the air, by cowards.

This is a war that will not end - this is just a pause for a time but, whether we like it or not, we should forget about the scenes of fleeing like during the al-Nakba [the forced expulsion of about 750,000 Palestinians after Israel's creation in 1948]. One month later, tens of thousands of homes have been damaged. We lost so much in this war after, no doubt, tens of tonnes of Israeli explosives were dropped on Gaza.
Resistance won the war, but so did the resilience of the people of Gaza. Nowhere to go now, we have Israel ahead of us, and the beach behind us. We must face the challenges, because this is our land.

I shall hope that Egypt will make the conditions of resistance succeed. Arabs were watching us. I am appalled by the Arab silence. Why are they just watching Gaza being slaughtered? Where is the Arabism? Where is the Arabism? No Arabism.
I am confident in the resistance.

Even our apartment has been bombed. The aim is to make us displaced in UN schools and then be a target for tank shells. As you see we had our three shops completely destroyed, but I know fully in my heart that God will compensate us.
Till the last day of the war, we remained in our apartment, but when the apartment next door sustained damages, we ran to seek shelter at my grandpa's place in Shujayea, and there it was bombed again.
We ended up going to relatives in the west. There is nowhere safe. Even al-Shifa hospital has been targeted.

Nobody won the war, not any of the sides. I only blame one side: the Arab states for their silence which gave the green light to Israel to kill indiscriminately.
All Arabs don't like us Palestinians, because we are, after all, fighting the filthiest occupation, sticking to our land and maintaining Arab courage.

And I say to the resistance: Go ahead, we are behind you. I say this despite losing my home and some family members being injured. I say this despite my pain and deep wounds. If I were to describe this last month: It was a war of terror.
This war made me believe only in the resistance, and the resistance will bring an end to this occupation. It is the resistance which defends us and our souls - the world is watching us, but they are doing nothing for us.

Mumbai: Emraan Hashmi's "Ghanchakkar" and "Ek Thi Daayan" were abandoned by the viewers at the box office, but the actor is of the opinion that failures didn't impact his career as he had an impressive track record.

"It never affects you... it depends... you have to have a track record," said the actor when asked about the impact of failure on his career.

"Before that I had given four back-to-back hits and even the industry understands that this is a kind of film that is niche. But yes, if it would have been a commercial and a massy film and then if it wouldn't have lived up to the mark, there would have been a problem," he said.

Meantime, he feels it is unfair to compare "Shanghai" and "Ek Thi Daayan" with "Raaz 3".

"If 'Raaz 3' was a mass horror, 'Ek Thi Daayan' was an experimental horror and it had a class element in the way it was shot. So it is unfair to expect 'Ek Thi Daayan' to do business of 'Raaz 3'.

"Then again what happens is for 'Ek Thi Daayan' I had to take a pay cut... people don't see that. I didn't charge my remuneration for 'Raaz 3'."

Mumbai: The censor board has objected to the way Johny Lever's character's name has been mispronounced in the forthcoming film "Entertainment" and asked its makers to change it.

The Censor Board Of Film Certification (CBFC), which viewed the film late last week, has asked for Johnny's character's names to be changed.

Said a source, "Lever's character is named Abdullah, which is a very sacred name. Throughout the film other characters keep mispronouncing Abdullah's name, calling him all sorts of things like 'arashogollah' and 'amashallah'.

"The CBFC has asked the film's producers and co-directors Sajid-Farhad to change Johnny Lever's name to avoid hurting anyone's sentiments."

While the jokes on Johnny's name remain, he is no longer called 'Abdullah' but 'Habibulllah' in the movie.

Starring Akshay Kumar in the lead role, the film is coming out Friday, therefore, the director duo had to work overnight to make the necessary change.

"It was a lot of hard work since Johnny's character is there throughout the film and the jokes on his name occur all through. But there was no option. We can't afford to take risks of hurting religious sentiments.

"In fact, the CBFC has also ordered the removal of a shot showing Akshay Kumar throwing a 'trishul' (trident) across the screen. The CBFC doesn't want any Hindu organization to ask why the trishul is being used as a weapon," said the source.

Also, CBFC objected to the world 'HIV' used in a dialogue as a joke. It has been muted.

Sonam, Fawad entertain on 'Entertainment Ke Liye...' finale
Mumbai: "Khoobsurat" stars Sonam Kapoor and
Fawad Khan danced and entertained at the grand finale of
reality show "Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega", which will be aired Thursday.
The opening of the finale episode will witness a dance performance by Sonam on the song "Bumb dole" from her upcoming movie. The duo will also launch the upcoming song of their movie "Engine ki patri" on the show.

Pakistani star Fawad, who is making his Bollywood debut with "Khoobsurat", also tried his hand at imitating Shah Rukh Khan, while filmmaker-choreographer Farah Khan, who is a judge on the show, taught him how to dance.

The finale will be more entertaining courtesy actress-host Mona Singh, who will put her singing talent on display with Meiyang Chang.

Mumbai: The tragic Komagata Maru incident, whose 100th anniversary falls this year, is finally going to unfold on the big screen as part of a co-production treaty signed between India and Canada.

Confirming these details, a source from Canada said, "It ('Komagata Maru') would now be a $22 million Indo-Canada production to be directed by an A-lister from Hollywood."

"It will have one top Indian actor playing a Sikh. We want Mr Bachchan for that role. One top Japanese actor and one Hollywood actor, besides many other prominent actors from India, Canada and the US."

Komagata Maru was a Japanese ship hired by a Malaysia-based wealthy Sikh Gurdit Singh in 1914 to forcibly bring 376 Indians, mostly Sikhs, into Canada to challenge racist laws of that time. But when the ship reached Vancouver via Hong Kong, its passengers were not allowed to disembark for two months and then forcibly sent back to India where 20 were shot dead by police on arrival in Kolkata.

Now, the long stranded project would be the first beneficiary of the joint film treaty signed by India and Canada July 1.

According to the treaty, filmmakers from both countries would be at liberty to make films as and how they want in India and Canada with heavy tax and production subsidies.

"Komagata Maru" has been a long-in-the-pipeline dream project involving huge money and therefore prohibitive to make.

Canada-based Indian filmmaker Deepa Mehta was to direct the project initially with Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar in the lead. But now the project will be helmed by a top Hollywood director.

Eros International has stepped in as the Indian producers for the ambitious epic drama.

Interestingly, the project is being co-scripted by Vinay Virmanim, the young Canada-based Indian actor who starred in Bejoy Nambiar's "David" and would soon be seen in the Canada-produced comedy "Dr Cabbie".

He says newcomers may be doing it, but they can't compete with his hours of experience.

"Someone asked me that the new kids started doing (kissing) it on the screen, but I feel very foolish to say this, but it's more evolved after years of practice...," said the actor for "Murder", "Zeher" and "Woh Lamhe".

"The things what I do these amateurs can't do.. I know they mean well, I know they put in their hard work... but I have like 1000 hours of experience compared to like 10 hours of theirs," added the 35-year-old.

Mumbai: Two decades since the release of Sooraj Barjatya's hit family drama "Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!", Karan Johar says it was the movie which made him decide he wanted to be a filmmaker.

The film, about love and family, starred Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit in lead roles.

 Makers of Ajay Devgn-Kareena Kapoor starrer 'Singham Returns' have agreed to delete certain scenes from the film which were found to be objectionable by a right-wing Hindu organisation.
The decision was taken after members of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) met movie director Rohit Shetty, Devgn and creative director Ashok Pandit in Mumbai yesterday.
"The HJS registered its objections with producers, directors and the Censor Board after watching its trailer.

The decision was taken after members of the right-wing organisation met director Rohit Shetty in Mumbai yesterday.

Accordingly, producers and directors called a meeting and gave us a concrete assurance to remove objectionable scenes raised by us," HJS national spokesman Ramesh Shinde told PTI today.
HJS leaders had condemned the movie after its trailer depicted a saint as villain.
The film, which is scheduled to be released on August 15, depicted scenes and dialogues which hurt the religious feelings of Hindus, Shinde said.
The HJS has circulated a letter written by the movie's co-producer Kumar Mangat Pathak which assured that "all the shots which were mutually discussed to be deleted will be deleted and will not be there in the film".
"We respect your sentiments and assure you that nothing will be done to disrespect it," the letter dated August 4, 2014, read.

Mumbai: Acclaimed filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar has been chosen to receive the Raj Kapoor Smriti Award from the Maharashtra government for his contribution to Indian cinema.

The filmmaker is honoured by the award, which will be conferred Aug 12 at a ceremony.

“Thank you to each one of you for the congratulatory messages you sent. I accept this Maharashtra State honour bestowed on me, in all humility," Bhandarkar tweeted.

The recent award has added another achievement to Bhandarkar's credit. He has so far received four National Awards for his films “Chandani Bar”, “Page 3”, “Fashion” and “Traffic Signal”.

The filmmaker is now busy making his next film “Calendar Girls” based on lives of models who feature on special calendars.

Actress Tanuja and Marathi actress Uma Bhende will be conferred with the Lifetime Achievement honour at the Raj Kapoor Smriti Awards.

Mumbai: Be it Bollywood or Hollywood - in the world of showbiz, several marriages are crumbling. Actress Soha Ali Khan, who recently got engaged to her beau Kunal Kemmu, says the key to a healthy relationship is to "work around the dissatisfactions" as nothing is perfect.

The actors got engaged in Paris recently, and they are yet to decide on their nuptials. In a tete-a-tete, Soha spoke about relationships and her idea of marriage. Excerpts:

Q. Many marriages in showbiz are crumbling. Does that scare you?

A. I’ve always felt when you are committed in a relationship, you’ve to work through the difficult times. I’ve seen my parents (Sharmila Tagore and late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi) in a successful solid marriage for 44 years. I am sure they had their problems. They were completely different personalities. But they must have worked on their marriage. And they made it work. I never felt any insecurity regarding my parents’ marriage. I think they handled their issues and the public face of their marriage was so dignified.

Q. Then how according to you, does a modern marriage work?

A. There is no perfect relationship. You have to work around the dissatisfaction. One reason why marriages break faster now is because people live longer. Earlier people died at 60. Now they live to be a 100, so all that more time to spend in a marriage. How many years can you live happily in one relationship? You need to have a sense of commitment, maturity and infinite patience to make a marriage last.

Q. Are you arguing against marrying Kunal?

A. To keep a relationship going in today’s day and age is very difficult. I’d like to think if my relationship has worked for five years, it’s permanent. We are all so self-centred. So am I. To give that much to a relationship is very difficult.

Q. Would you be able to do it?

A. My happiness always came first. But now to make Kunal happy makes me happier. But ultimately, I don’t know how much I can sacrifice for anyone else. I always said we should not take the relationship for granted. We need to continue to communicate our feelings about one another, no matter what its repercussions.

Only an honest approach can keep a relationship going. I’ve seen the dignity that my parents brought into their marriage. If I am a secure person today it’s because of the marriage that my parents shared. I’d certainly want my child to feel the same sense of security.

In a new twist to the alleged rape case against Mumbai Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sunil Paraskar, the prosecution lawyer Chitra Salunkhe today claimed to have a recorded audio clip of model's former lawyer Rizwan Siddiqui offering her money to withdraw the case.
"I have the recording where Rizwan Siddiqui suggests offering money to victim and asking her to forget about the case. The audio conversation was recorded on July 18, 2014," said Salunkhe.
Senior advocate and women's rights activist Abha Singh also criticized Siddiqui for releasing private conversation between a lawyer and a client and said that he should be suspended.

We all know about the alleged romance between Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. Though the couple have never made it official, but they have been spotted many times either in foreign locations or in Mumbai spending some quality time together.
The latest buzz doing the round is that the love birds are very serious about each other and planning to head for the altar. Yes, you read it right.

Mumbai: Director Rohit Shetty said his dream is to direct megastar AmitabhBachchan in an action film and also wishes to team up with superstar Salman Khan.
“It is my dream to work with Mr Bachchan. I want to do an action film with him. I have not really told him that I want to work with him in a full-fledged film,” Shetty, told .
Bachchan had done a special song in Shetty’s directorial venture ‘Bol Bachchan’.
The 71-year-old actor had also lent his voice for the opening episode of the fifth season of action-adventure reality show ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi’, hosted by Shetty.
“Though I have worked with him in ‘Bol Bachchan’ (where Bachchan did a cameo), I want to work with him again. I was in an awe of him,” he said.
The director, known for his mass-entertainer films, said he has been watching Bachchan since childhood and his films like ‘Deewar’, ‘Zanjeer’, ‘Amar Akhtar Anthony’ are among his favourites.
“I used to go to the sets of his films with my dad (veteran stunt-master-actor M B Shetty) and observe him. I still get scared when he is around,” he said.
Besides Big B, Shetty said he would also like to work with ‘Dabangg’ star Salman Khan.
“I would love to do a film with him. But it has to be something big for us to come together, like how I and Shah Rukh Khan came together for ‘Chennai Express’. As of now there is nothing in hand (any script for Salman),” he said.

  Mumbai: "Take the best, leave the rest" seems to be Kareena Kapoor's mantra for choosing films. The actress, who is said to have refused six scripts lately, says she is keen to do a few but fantastic films as there's never a "middle way" for her.

"If the scripts were good, I would have definitely said 'yes'. A few scripts work for some actresses, a few scripts don't work. But, yes, my job is to choose the best script," Kareena told  in an interview here.

The 34-year-old, who married actor-producer Saif Ali Khan in 2012, said: "After marriage, I want to do only one or two films at a time. I can't do too many films. That's my personal decision and I want people to respect that.

"Whatever I will chose it would be according to my time frame. It should be worthy enough that I leave my home and go to work. Either it should be the biggest film of the year or it should have the best script. There is no middle way out for me at the moment."

Wouldn't turning down offers affect her personal equation with celebrities?

"I don't think it affects relationships at all. It's (a film is) an actor's choice and one film can't affect a relationship. In fact, if you say 'no' to somebody, there are chances that they will come back. After all, it's a film! If you are not comfortable, it's okay," said the actress, who will now be seen in "Singham Returns".

Kareena, who belongs to the famous Kapoor family of Hindi cinema, started her Bollywood career in 2000 with J.P. Dutta's "Refugee". She made space in the industry with entertainers like "Ajnabee", "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...", "Chameli", "Aitraaz", "Omkara", "Don", "Jab We Met", "Tashan", "Golmaal Returns", "Kurbaan", "3 Idiots", "Bodyguard", "Ra.One", "Talaash: The Answer Lies Within" and "Satyagraha".

The actress is clear about what she wants.

In fact, on an episode of celebrity chat show "Koffee With Karan", filmmaker Anurag Kashyap advised Kareena: "Don't ask who is in the film; you should ask what is the film." She is taking it seriously.

"I am taking his advice and that's why I am rejecting scripts because I am choosing films on the basis of scripts," Kareena said.

She, however, feels the Hindi film industry suffers from a lack of good scriptwriters.

"People should write good scripts. I definitely feel there is a lack of scriptwriters...a lot of people don't get a chance. Probably, there are good writers who don't get a chance; so I am listening to everybody - from small to big. I am meeting everybody - whoever has a good script," said the actress, who is the daughter of veteran actors Randhir Kapoor and Babita.

Kareena is yet to be a mother, but while there has been a lot of hullabaloo over whether there should be a "no pregnancy" clause for actresses when they sign a contract with Bollywood studios or not, she has a point to make.

She feels if Indian filmmakers are aping the West, they should also include insurance of an actor while drafting the agreement papers.

"I think it's ('no pregnancy' clause is) fine by me. If it's there, it doesn't matter, but I think we try to ape foreign. It's just because in the west they have no pregnancy clause, even we want to do it.

"But in the west, they insure an actor for a million dollars, but here we are not bothered about insuring the actors," said the outspoken actress.

"If they want to put a 'no pregnancy clause' they should insure the actors also," she added.

Case Against Aamir Khan Over Nude 'PK' Poster

LUCKNOW: A case was filed in a court in Kanpur Saturday against Aamir Khan and the producer and director of new movie "PK" after its poster showed the Bollywood star in the nude except for a transistor covering his private parts.

In the complaint, lawyer Manoj Dixit accused the actor, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and director Rajkumar Hirani of promoting nudity and vulgarity.

The film is scheduled for release in December.

The court listed the case for Aug 7 when the contention of the petitioner would be heard and, if needed, the producer, director and actor will be served notice to appear before it.

The petitioner said Aamir Khan has considerable influence on the youth of today and any such act would only tempt youths to emulate him, thereby threatening the social order.

This in turn, he added, would lead to cases of sexual offences.

Many newspapers had printed posters of the forthcoming movie in which Aamir Khan is reportedly playing an alien.

BHOPAL: Traditionally Bhopal has been known as nursery of hockey. Of late, football clubs have also come up with city teenagers evincing keen interest in soccer.

As many as 16 football clubs and academies have started flourishing in the city. And some young players are also leaving their mark at national level tournaments.

A senior office-bearer of District Football Association said, "We have two to three players each in under-14, under-16 and under-19 national team from Bhopal. They all have been selected from open camps. In women's team, one girl has been selected from the city. We have good players till under-19, but their parents do not allow most of them to attend camps. We are losing many good players this way."

Feroz Khan, who is heading Barkatullah University Football Academy, for last three years said, "I started with two students and now I have more than 50 students with around 20 girls. The craze is evidently growing. Fitness with entertainment is major advantage. Recently, one of the girl, Chanchal Singh Kaushik, played senior nationals in Santosh Trophy in Assam. She is also state referee of Madhya Pradesh Football team."'

Rehmat Baig, coach of JRK Football Club, said, "Tarun Uikey and Rajeev Khaira have done really well from our club. Rajeev has been selected for All India Football Federation Academy in Mumbai for under-15 squad. Tarun has attended national camp two times besides playing under-16 and under-19 nationals representing the state and the state team got 3rd position in under-19. We have 16 to 17 boys with us, it is still growing."

Karan Johar approaches Aamir Khan for Dharma Productions' next

grapevine, renowned Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar has approached Aamir Khan, who is among the headlines for his upcoming flick ‘PK’, to sign a film with Dharma Productions.

However, the production house hasn’t disclosed anything about the project so far.

Karan Johar seems to be looking forward to expand his reaches in the industry as recently, he signed Salman Khan for his upcoming much-anticipated project Shuddhi and now the director is willing to go ahead with another mighty Khan namely Aamir.

Earlier, it was being reported that Aamir Khan was willing to work with Dharma Productions and coming across his desire, Karan has invited him for the project.

Keeping Aamir Khan’s convenient in mind, the project has been scheduled to kick start later.
