"Fugly,Vijendra Singh ka film ka naam hai"

They are 20-something newbie actors full of energy, zeal and a desire to bring about change. So meeting Vijender Singh, Kiara Advani, Arfi Lamba and Mohit Marwah — the four lead actors of Kabir Sadanand’s Fugly at Cinepolis, Magarpatta city, on Saturday evening was indeed an invigorating session.
It was also interesting to observe their chemistry and camaraderie. Here, the actors tell us what the film means to them, how they would deal with corruption in real life and how Fugly has changed them as a person. Excerpts:
There is a song in your film Yeh fugly, fugly kya hai... What does ‘Fugly’ mean to you?
Vijender: Fugly,Vijendra Singh ka film ka naam hai(laughs). On a serious note, we have shot an entire song explaining ‘fugly’. It stands for funny, fantastic and fight. You could choose any of the three interpretations.
Kiara: Fugly is slang but in our film it stands for — ‘fighting for what you think is right’. We are a bunch of youngsters fresh out of college. We are carefree but not careless. We meet Chautala (Jimmy Shergill) who takes us to the world of corruption and politics. It’s up to us how we handle the situation and take responsibility for our deeds.
Mohit: I agree with Kiara. We are calling it: ‘Fight against the ugly’.
Arfi: Fugly means it’s time for change. Anyone can relate to the story. The film shows youngsters taking responsibility for their action.
You get involved in an ugly situation in the film. How would you deal with a similar situation in real life?
Kiara: Thankfully, I have never been in such a situation. That said, I have learnt a lot from my character. Now, I know how to deal with such situations in real life.
Mohit: I have been through many ‘fugly’ situations. I remember once my friends and I got into a fight in Delhi and the police came and beat us. At that point we thought we should say sorry and get out of the place. We were young and didn’t know how to deal with the situation.
Vijender: I am a cop. I know how to tackle such situations (laughs).
The turning point in your life in the film comes when you meet Chautala (Jimmy Shergill). Any experiences of handling corrupted cops?
Everybody looks at Vijender.
Vijender: Mera number rakh lo, kabhi kaam ayega. I had not paid the toll fee, just flashed my card (laughs).
Kiara: Arre fugly kya kar diya tune (everyone laughs).
Mohit: The day Narendra Modi was elected, I remember driving home in my car and I was on the phone, which was my fault. A traffic cop stopped me and asked for money. I don’t know what happened to me, but I was like, ‘Today, we have a new government and I will not pay any bribe’. I gave a long lecture to the cop, who realised his mistake and asked me to leave. I was a changed person from that day (everyone laughs).
Your film talks about corruption and dirty politics. As youngsters how much does it affect you?
Arfi: It’s about being the change and learning to be more responsible. In Ahmedabad, people park their vehicles properly why can't they do the same thing here?
Also, I carry wrappers in my pocket just because I do not want to throw them on the road! Mumbai’s traffic is such a headache; it’s high time that the government did something.
Vijender: The recent rapes in Uttar Pradesh are so disturbing. Some strict action needs to be taken. We need to change the age-old law. It has to become more stringent.
Mohit: Doing the film has brought about a major transformation. Earlier, I was carefree, now I understand things. I have become a big supporter of freedom and I think Article 377 should be scrapped because you cannot put boundaries on others’ life.
