Ameen Haroon Sheikh of Hadapsar is Pune Police's chief witness to the murder of Mohsin Sheikh. The 30-yr-old recounts Monday night's horror in the bylanes of Unnati Nagar to PrateekGoyal

Icame back to the city after a visit to my in-laws' in Bigvan, 100 kms from Pune, late on Monday night. The bus dropped me off at Siddeshwar petrol pump, following which I looked for an autorickshaw; unable to find one, I started walking in the direction of my home.

As soon as I reached the entrance of Satav plot, close to my house, I saw a group of 15 to 20 people vandalising the board of Ram-Rahim Mitra Mandal, in the bylane of the plot.

Even before I could assimilate the situation building up in front of me, I turned stone cold with fright. I tried to hide in the corner of a shut-down soda shop nearby, but I was spotted. I helplessly watched the mob rushing towards me screaming "dhara yala dhara, hya dadi-topi walya la dhara, sodu naka yala, mara yala (catch this fellow, this beard and cap toting man, don't let him escape, kill him)." I ran in the opposite direction.

They chased me. Some were on bikes, others on foot. They had iron rods and hockey sticks as weapons. I ran for about 300 metres and came to a car accessories shop with half-open shutters. I requested the shop owner to protect me. Please get me in, or they will kill me, I told him. I was allowed in, whereupon I hid behind the counter, but the rioters were quick.

They pushed the owner of the shop aside and rained sharp blows with their weapons on my back. More people entered and joined in. One of them tried to hit me hard on the head but I prevented the blows holding up my hand. I pleaded, "Tumhi mala kashala marta hai, me kaya kela aahe, mala naka maru (Why are you hitting me, what have I done, please don't hit me)," but they were in no mood to listen. It was only to get worse.

They started hitting me with their bare hands as well. I feared that this was perhaps to be my last day on earth. I saw some empty boxes lying around; I slithered under them and pretended to be dead. That saved me. They continued with their act and eventually left me, thinking I was either dead or unconscious.

The owner of the shop came in after a while, and seeing my condition, suggested that I should immediately leave the place to save my life. I hobbled towards my home, bleeding profusely. I went to my neighbour's house and informed him about the incident. I could not find my phone, and requested him to connect with my family (my family was out on a function and no one was at home). I went home only after my family arrived. I was too terrified to be on my own.

As my family came to fetch me, I was told that a boy had been killed in Bankar Colony by the rioters, 500 metres away from my home. I tried to put myself together, changed my clothes, removed my cap and headed to Mohantara Hospital with my neighbours. At home, I got to know about the brutal killing to Mohsin Sheikh. I knew him well. We used to often meet at the neighbourhood mosque.
