'I am alive because of Amitabh Bachchan',Revealed: The truth behind Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha's love story

Revealed: The truth behind Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha's love story

Sonakshi Sinha and Arjun Kapoor are on a movie date spree. The two have gone out not once, twice but several times to watch movies at suburban theaters. Given the fact that they are also doing a movie called Tevar, we initially considered this to be a regular outing of costars post pack up. However, a source close to the two tell us that there is definitely more than just love of films that’s common between the two.
Apparently Arjun and Sonakshi have hit it off really well from the start. Since they both are young and have chilled out personalities, the two didn’t shy away from going out in front of the shutterbugs and getting clicked. Mind you this is the first time Sonakshi has been seen with her co-star over the span of several weeks. Even when there was chatter of her affair with Shahid Kapoor, there were no photos or pics of them together. In fact the only time they were seen in public space was to promote their film R…Rajkumar.
Given the fact that they don’t need to promote Tevar now and there’s ample time for the film to hit the screens, it leaves no doubt in our minds that Arjun and Sona are definitely getting close to each other and before we know they might be texting sweet nothings to each other. Also since both have had setbacks in their previous relationships, we think these two will take it slow.

'I am alive because of Amitabh Bachchan'

'One day, I interviewed Aruna Irani.
Afterwards, Mehmood called me and said, ‘What did you ask Aruna and what did she say? People are flocking around wherever I go and they are upset with me, they even blocked my car.'
The generosity of Dara Singh.
Manoj Kumar's passion for cooking.
Amitabh Bachchan's selfless gesture.
Veteran actress, television personality and anchor Tabassum, who has completed 67 years in the industry, shares her insights about the stars of the past.
There is a gentleness and an innate sense of courtesy about her.
As also a sense of friendliness. As the interview progresses, you realise how she has managed to charm the industry with her smiling persona for so many decades.
Don't missing the second part of this interesting interview where Tabassum shares some rare anecdotes with Patcy N.
Catch the first part of the interview here.
'My mother said I started saying my own shayaris before I knew how to read and write'
Tabassum with her fan mail
Tabassum shares a glimpse of the fan mail she used to receive during the years Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan was aired on Doordarshan.
I started doing a radio show called Phulwari on All India Radio when I was three. In 1948, I was on the cover of a magazine published by AIR.
Only two playback singers were famous and sang for AIR -- Lata Mangeshkar’s father Dinanath Mangeshkar and Govinda’s mother, Nirmala Devi Arun.
My mother said I started saying my own shayaris before I knew how to read and write. She would write down whatever I said and get it published. So, technically, I have been a writer for the last 67 years as well. I have been editor of the magazine Grihalaxmi for the past 17 years.
My second innings in radio started in 1970, when I was married and had nothing to do. Ameenbhai (Ameen Sayani) brought me back.
He was doing a show called Saridon Ke Saathi, where one star would come on radio and talk about three other actors.
Ameenbhai asked me to do a show on Radio Ceylon called Maratha Darbar Ki Mehkti Batein. It was a jokes-based programme and I was good at telling jokes.
I did that show for 18 years.
'Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan was telecast one week after Mumbai Doordarshan was launched'
Tabassum with Shatrughan Sinha
'Nobody can touch Shatrughan Sinha's chin like that, he was my neighbour,' says Tabassum.
I have completed 45 years in television.
When television first came to India, it was only telecast in Delhi. Many years later, in 1972, Doordarshan came to Mumbai. Before that, I would go to Delhi to do television programmes. I would conduct mushairas (poetry reading sessions) for Doordarshan, where I would tell jokes and read out my poetry.
Mumbai Doordarshan was launched on October 2, 1972. Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan was telecast one week later, on October 8. It ran for 21 years.
I wrote, researched, coordinated and decided who would come on the show. It was a one-woman show.
I had a good relationship with actors, directors, music composers and singers. There was no one in the industry whom I did not know. I had sat in the laps of all the senior actors as a child artiste and had seen my juniors grow up.
The proof of my bond with the industry is the show I am doing currently, Abhi Toh Main Jawaan Hoon. It is based on the golden era of Hindi cinema.
Even after doing shows for so many years on Doordarshan, I did not do well financially.
You will be shocked to know that Doodarshan paid me Rs 70 per show. When the show ended 21 years, I was being paid Rs 750.
Ameen Sayani and I S Johar told me I was being exploited. But I wanted to do the show because it had made a household name. I stayed back just because of that greed.
But when the younger generation was asked to do shows in the same format, they were paid in thousands. It hurt me and I left.
Shatrughan Sinha came on my show thrice. His interviews were very good.

Khane peene ka Kapoor parivaar bahut shaukeen hain'
Tabassum with Sanjay Dutt
'As a child artiste, I sat on the laps of all the senior actors. I have seen the star kids grow up and they have played on my lap,' says Tabassum.
I liked to have Shammi Kapoor on my show. I once told him that Saira Banu was his heroine in Junglee (1961) and in Zameer (1974), he played her father. He should have maintained himself better as she still looked young.
Shammi Kapooor remained silent for a while. Then he said, ‘Khane peene ka Kapoor parivaar bahut shaukeen hain (The Kapoors love eating and drinking), so this had to happen'.
He added, ‘I dieted all my life to earn and be at the top, but how long can I sustain that? I don’t know if there is agla janam (life after death) so why not eat and live in this life?’
Shashi Kapoor said the same thing: ‘People diet their whole life and don’t live their life.’
As a child, I worked with him in Sangram. He was a child artiste then. He played the younger Ashok Kumar and I played the younger Nalini Jaywant.
Manoj Kumar cancelled my show one day. He said he had a bad backache. I frantically started calling other actors to come on the show, but nobody was free that day.
I called Dara Singh and explained the situation and asked if he could be ready to shoot in an hour’s time. He immediately agreed and helped me out.
Manoj Kumar came on my show another time. He is a very cute person. He loves cooking. He even shared a culinary secret... he said that, in order to make mutton soft, all you need to do is add a small piece of betelnut.
Dharmendra never came on my show. I think I did not approach him. But I worked with him in many movies. I played his sister in Dulhan Ek Shaam Ki and did many stage shows with him.
Rajesh Khanna came on my show too.
Sanjeev Kumar came on my show twice. He was a darling. I have worked with him in films too.

'Meena Kumari actress toh bahut acchi thi lekin biwi achchi nahi thi'
Tabassum with Shah Rukh Khan
Tabassum's even pally with the younger lot of actors like Shah Rukh Khan.
One day, I interviewed Aruna Irani. Afterwards, Mehmood called me and said, ‘What did you ask Aruna and what did she say? People are flocking around wherever I go and they are upset with me, they even blocked my car.’
I had asked her, ‘Why did Mehmood ditch you?’
Before I interviewed (director of classics like Pakeezah and Mahal) Kamal Amrohi, he told me I could ask him questions about anything except (his wife) Meena Kumari.
I told him my audience would abuse me if I didn’t. He agreed, but said I could only ask him what kind of actress she was.
I agreed and said my last question would be, ‘Comment on Meena Kumari.’
During the show, he replied she was a very good actress. I immediately asked him, 'How was she as a wife?'
He was shocked. He said, ‘Woh actress toh bahut acchi thi lekin biwi achchi nahi thi, ghar main bhi woh apne aapko actress he samajhti thi’ (She was a good actress but not a good wife. She thought she was an actress at home as well.)
When I interviewed Rakhee, I asked her ‘Kamal saab said a lady could either be a good wife or a good actress, not both. What do you have to say?’
She replied, ‘Tum bhi toh biwi aur actress ho, tum batao na’ (You are also a wife and an actress, so you can answer that).
Amitabh Bachchan would not come to the television studio; he would call us to the sets of his film.
I never had to prepare; I knew everything about the actors and would just think up a few questions while going to the studio.
One day I was travelling by taxi when I saw someone begging at a signal. I realised it was Parshuram! He was a very big actor of his time. He was a child artiste with Prabhat Studios and later the topmost villain, as popular as Amrish Puri was. He had played the role of a father in some of my films.
I was shocked to see him begging.
I took him to my director, who immediately recognised him. He told me to interview Parshuram.
People loved the show so much that they sent lots of monetary help. Even Shankar Rao Chavan, the then chief minister of Maharashtra, gave money from the chief minister’s fund.
Due to the success of this episode, DD did another show on out-of-work actors and crew members. I helped actors and technicians who needed it. The show was called Parikrama and was hosted by Kamleshwar (Kamleshwar was a popular Hindi writer who had also scripted films like Aandhi, Mausam and Chhoti Si Baat. Parikrama proved to be a hugely popular show).
Phool Khile Hai Gulshan Gulshan was the pioneer of chats shows. All the shows that came later were inspired by or copied from this show, whether it is Koffee with Karan or Rendezvous with Simi Garewal. The Anupam Kher Show is a ditto copy of my show.
I like all the shows. They all have different styles. Simi is sophisticated, Karan is chatpata.
'Dilip Kumar would be sitting on the stairs of his house, eating khichidi and pudiney ki chutney'
Tabassum with Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar
Tabassum with the two superstars of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar.
Dilip Kumar loves sher-o-shayari. He loves different cuisines. He never throws a tantrum.
His elder sister, Sakina, was my mother’s friend, so I went to his house often. He would be sitting on the stairs eating khichidi and pudiney ki chutney.
I worked in Dilip Kumar’s Jogan. He did not cut my scenes. He appreciated my work. Kidar Nath Sharma, the director of the film, also gave breaks to Madhubala, Raj Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar and Geeta Bali.
In one scene I had to say, ‘Om Prabhu Shanti.’ As a child, I could not pronounce ‘Ra’ so I kept saying ‘Om Palbhoo Shanti’.
Kidar Nath Sharma got angry and yelled at me. After three takes, I started crying and said, ‘Hum mal (mar) jayenge agal hum se letake hogaye’ (I’ll die if you make me do another retake).
Dilip Kumar saw this and said, ‘Aap kyun malengi (marengi), malna (marna) toh chahiye Sharmaji ko jo chhote se bachche se jabardasti ‘Ra’ bulwaa rahe hain. Beta, tu palbhoo bol, wahi achcha lagta hain.’ (Why should you die? Sharmaji should die for forcing a small girl to say ‘Ra’. You say ‘palbhoo’, it sounds nice)
Jeetendra was my childhood friend. I lived in Byculla and Jeetendra stayed in Girgaum (both Byculla and Girgaum are located in southern Mumbai). I would go to his place to play.
I went frequently to play at Joy Mukherjee’s house in Hasnabad Lane in Byculla. Parikshit Sahani and Shashi Kapoor were also my childhood friends.
We would all go to Ashok Kumar’s house to play and chat non-stop.
I will tell you an incident with Amitabh Bachchan which is not related to Phool Khile. I have done many live shows with him and Kalyanji-Anandji in India and abroad.
This took place at Shanmukhananda Hall in Mumbai. I was sitting in a wheelchair and conducting the show as my leg was fractured and there was a fire that caused a stampede.
I started shouting for help. Nobody came. They were all running for their lives.
Amitji came and took me to a safe place. Today, I am alive because of him. I truly believe:
Hamesha dekha gaya hai mahan jhukta hai,Zameen nahi jhukti hai aasman jhukta hai.
(It is always seen that the great bend down,The Earth never bends, it's the sky that bends down.)
Back to the present
I have published 11 books on jokes and Urdu shayaris.
My son did not do well in films. My granddaughter Kushi too did not do well in the industry because, in films today, you have to expose a lot.
She was offered Dev D. We said no to it. Now, she is working in a corporate firm.
I am currently doing a television show called Abhi Toh Main Jawan Hoon. It’s been on air for four years, on TV Asia in the USA and Canada.
I have a stage show called Tabassum Hit Parade. I also host a show called Bhakti Main Masti, Tabassum Bhajan Sandhya. I do lots of charity shows now.
I never ran after money. I like to do things that satisfy me. After all,
Khoob kamao paisa, heera, moti,Yaad rakho, kafan main jeb nahi hoti

Yeh Dil Sun Raha Hai: The cast uses own costumes

The Sony PAL show is produced by Ekta Kapoor, who also owns the Killick Nixon studio.
"They are shooting cut-to-cut as the show is aired Monday to Saturday. So the artists are using their own clothes while shooting. They have placed a bulk order for the show's attires, but it will take some time for the delivery. So, for a couple of days, the artists are shooting in their clothes," a source told
"Yeh Dil Sun Raha Hai" is a Patna-based love story between a daughter of a senior government employee and a son of the local coal mafia. It stars Aparna Dixit and Navi Bhangu in the lead.

''Would love to sing for Katrina Kaif,'' admits Natalie Di Luccio

Natalie Di Luccio may not have had a background in Bollywood industry, but her love for music has certainly paved the way for Playback singing. From crooning ‘Aadha Ishq' (BAND BAAJA BAARAT) to ‘Navrai Majhi' (ENGLISH VINGLISH) and ‘Ready Steady Po' (CHENNAI EXPRESS), Natalie has indeed come a long way. In a brief chat, the sexy singer gets candid about her musical journey, her Bollywood projects & much more in our special section Music Mania. Excerpts from the interview:

How did music happen to you?
My parents put me in voice lessons when I was 5 because I was always singing & dancing to barney songs around the house. They also put my brothers in guitar classes so needless to say we grew up in a musical household. I have been training in western classical music since then.  I use to sing in every competition and go for every audition I could find. I was very determined to become a professional singer. There was really no other option for me! I went on to a performing arts high school and later started my degree in Vocal Performance but before I could finish, India had opened its heart to me.

What attracted you to pursue Bollywood playback singing?
I grew up doing musical theatre in Canada and I feel that Bollywood is so much like a musical. The films are theatrical and every song has a story to tell which often includes dancing, and a lot of entertainment. It is very different that way and very fun to perform live. Having said all that, I didn't come to India with the dream of pursuing a career in Playback singing. I wouldn't necessarily say it works often but when the opportunity arises it is exciting and different. My voice mainly fits films that feature an NRI Indian or foreigner which would then justify my accent. I sing for a lot of ad jingles which is probably one of my favorite things to do. I love experimenting with new genres and voices. I also tend to sing operatic vocals for a lot of background scores as well and I find that very fun and a place where I can let loose and really use my full voice. At present, I am really enjoying working on some new original music here and doing my own arrangements of Hindi/Tamil/Gujarati songs etc. for my shows. Which one is your personal favourite from the songs you have sung?
My most recent song ‘Aila Aila' from the film I. That was probably the hardest but most fun experience I've had recording a song. Singing in Tamil is definitely not easy but the song is so different and seriously one that could be studied and depicted in a University course! Rahman sir is full of surprises which you hear in ‘Aila Aila'.
One music composer you wish to work for?
I hope to work for Pritam soon. I am a huge fan of his songs.

Sana Khan's beau assaults Sahil Khan

Sana Khan's beau assaults Sahil Khan

Mumbai: "Style" actor Sahil Khan has alleged that he was assaulted by actress Sana Khan's so-called beau Ismail Khan at a gym here.
The incident took place Oct 22 and Sahil registered a complaint with the Amboli police station on the same day.
"Investigation is going on, can't reveal anything right now," an official from Amboli told
According to Sahil, Ismail attacked him alleging that he gave wrong news about Sana to the press.
"On Oct 22nd, I was gymming when Ismail attacked me. I didn't know how to react because I didn't know why he started hitting me. He started saying that you are jealous of Sana and you are the one who has given wrong stories about her to the press,"
"Actually few days back, some stories about her and Ismail Khan's fake passports had come out. I have got nothing to do with these reports. I don't know why he dragged me into all this," he added.
Sahil also claims that he was threatened for his life by Ismail.

Saif Ali Khan wishes to be more consistent now

Saif Ali Khan wishes to be more consistent now
New Delhi: After a disappointing run of his last few releases, Saif Ali Khan says he now wants to focus on making films that match his sensibilities.
The 44-year-old actor, who last worked in much criticised multi-starrer comedy ‘Humshakals’, says he would like to go back to making movies like ‘Omkara’ and ‘Parineeta’ again.
“I feel I lost touch with myself in recent times and I don’t know why. I was listening to other people’s conviction.  I feel, it’s the time to do what I believe in and stick to my conviction and sensibilities whether I do films like ‘Parineeta’, ‘Omkara’ or ‘Hum Tum’.
“I would like to do such films again. I have generally been an erratic person by nature, which I am being bored off now. I want to be more consistent now and give things right amount of respect,” Saif told PTI in an interview.  The National-award winning actor next stars in ‘Happy Ending’, which is a spoof on romantic comedies.
Also starring Govinda, Ileana D’Cruz, Ranvir Shorey, Kalki Koechlin besides Preity Zinta and Kareena Kapoor in special appearances, the film is expected to hit theatres on November 21.
“It’s a story about somebody who has a problem with commitment and love. It’s a bit like a Woody Allen movie, a mature film. I am really proud that we made this film because it’s a kind of spoof on romantic comedies,” Saif said.
The actor, who is also co-producing the film, has teamed up with his ‘Go Goa Gone’ directors Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK as he feels his sensibilities match with the director duo.
“We three met during ‘Go Goa Gone’ and I really like the style of their working. The way they wrote my character in that film was really interesting.
“'Happy Ending' is a fresh film that Raj and DK have made. Our sensibilities match and we hope that we do lots of good work in the future as well,” he said.
Saif started his career in 1993 with romantic film ‘Aashiq Awara’, which earned him the best debut male award. But after that he did many films which did not do well at the box-office.
He got a fresh start again with slice-of-life film ‘Dil Chahta Hai’, followed by ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’, ‘Ek Hasina Thi’, ‘Omkara’ and ‘Hum Tum’.

Asked what kind of films he would love to associate himself with, Saif said, “It’s important to make good money at the box-office. Some films can do that while some films can’t and that doesn’t mean that those films are not good films.
“I like to do a mix of everything. I would like to do a film which hits 200 crore at the box-office and at the same time I would like to do a film which won’t make that much but would be for intelligent audience.”
Saif also stars in Reema Kagti’s yet untitled project.

Happy New Year' movie review

According to reports, 'Happy New Year' has opened to packed house in the country.
According to reports, 'Happy New Year' has opened to packed house in the country.
Mumbai: Farah Khan's 'Happy New Year' starring Deepika Padukone, Shah Rukh Khan, Sonu Sood, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani and Vivaan Shah got a worldwide release today. According to reports, multiplexes have witnessed highest number of footfall in the morning shows and the film is all set to create new day one box office records.
Below are the reviews of the film
DNA 4 stars
This is Farah Khan’s return to form – quite easily, this is her most complex script to date but she handles effortlessly. There are stereotypes (more on that later) but what’s commendable is the manner in which she springs a surprise everytime the screenplay becomes a tad tiresome. The mounting is jaw-dropping – from the colorful chawls of Mumbai to the elaborate sets to the pristine skyline of Dubai. HNY is dripping with extravagance and flamboyance – in a good way. The film has the quintessential Farah Khan moments -- the lavish introductions of all characters, grand songs, the camaraderie between the actors and a touch of patriotism.
Bollywood Hungama 4.5 stars
With mega blockbusters like MAIN HOON NA and OM SHANTI OM behind her, director Farah Khan (who also doubles up as the film's writer along with Mayur Puri and Althea Delmas Kaushal), by now, seems to know audience's taste when it comes to masala movies. And maybe that's why she makes absolute no mistake while serving the dish called HAPPY NEW YEAR. While the soul and the story of the film remains truly Indian with Bollywood masala, comedy et all... Farah has managed to make a glossy film with stunning visuals. The film is a bit stretched with its run time going to almost 3 hours, the comic moments, dance and music keeps you engaged.
Hindu
Happy New Year is too self-aware for its own good but thankfully, it packs in some laughs with moments of irreverence and political incorrectness. The sporting Anurag Kashyap-Vishal Dadlani cameo, or the scene where the team hacks into the results to eliminate a talented children’s team called Angels, Abhishek Bachchan’s snake dance (which is likely to go viral in nightclubs) or racist digs at the Korean team.
Speaking of Koreans, this is a team that rarely laughs. A dig at Korean cinema, perhaps, because what Farah is trying to say here is that dance (or by that extrapolation, art) is not about the form but about winning hearts.
India Today 2 stars
Shah Rukh Khan has worked hard on his body for this film and he does a fine job of flaunting it. Extremely full of energy most of the times, he entertains. Deepika puts in sincere efforts but is limited because of the writing. Boman Irani plays a Parsi and is the funniest of the lot. Sonu Sood is brilliant. Abhishek Bachchan performs well too and so does Vivaan Shah.
Vishal Shekhar's music is good for the film, some songs set the mood since dance performances are a part of the plot.
Rediff 2.5 stars
Happy New Year belongs to the rest of the cast. While Shah Rukh Khan is busy playing Shah Rukh Khan (or is it Rahul? I cannot tell anymore), Deepika Padukone, Vivaan Shah, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani and Sonu Sood steal the show from under his nose.
Although Deepika doesn’t turn out to be the remarkable dancer that she’s supposed to be in the film, she definitely is a solid, bankable actor who manages to even make Rakhi Sawant cool.
Boman Irani is yet against cast in a role so stereotypically Parsi that it makes you want to introduce the writers to some real Parsi people before they attempt to have another character belonging to the community ever again. Yet, Irani executes the task flawlessly, retaining his immensely likeable screen presence.
Vivaan Shah acts as an excellent support system, managing to play a teenager without either being dumb or rebellious while Sood seriously pulls up his socks and displays some commendable comic timing.

After the match, Abhishek told Deccan Chronicle that his wife will soon visit the city to support his team. "Ash will come for one of the games," he said.

The last few years, actor Jimmy Shergill has been portraying very intense characters. However, here’s a breather for him. The actor has signed up Abhik Bhanu’s (who has earlier directed Sab Kuch Hai Kuch Bhi Nahin and Dark Rainbow) directorial venture, Gun Pe Done, which is a slapstick comedy.
However, Shergill clears the air stating that even though the film has few comical moments, he isn’t indulging in baffoonery. Shergill, who is playing the character of Pancham in the film, says that the film has come at the right time. “After doing serious roles, this one will gives me an opportunity to explore a different space,” says the actor, who can’t remember anything similar that he would have done in the past except for Tom, Dick and Harry that was comical. In fact, the actor informs that Deepak Tijori, the director of Tom, Dick and Harry, is planning a sequel to it very soon.
However, Shergill is currently busy completing the first schedule of the sequel to Tanu Weds Manu, which is being shot in Lucknow and will start shooting for Gun Pe Done next month in Mumbai.
Alongside Shergill, the film stars a mad-cap team of Sanjay Mishra, Vijay Raaz, Vrijesh Hirjee and Deepraj Rana. “The actress is yet to be finalised. Most probably, it will be a newcomer,” says Shergill about the film that is being produced by Pioneer Films and Entertainment LLP.

Virat and Anushka's day out!

Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli were recently spotted at the Kokilaben hospital in Mumbai. The rumoured couple was there for a routine visit.
Virat who has been riding high ever since he broke Sachin Tendulkar's record (fastest to reach 20 ODI hundreds) came to pick up some medical records at the hospital.

Parineeti Chopra unveils 'Kill Dil' song on birthday

Mumbai: Actress Parineeti Chopra unveiled a romantic track titled "Sajda" from her forthcoming film "Kill Dil" Wednesday, which is also her birthday. She said she felt like a typical Yash Raj Films' heroine while shooting for it.
"This is my favourite song ever. This had been shot in some beautiful locations. I felt like a typical Yash Raj Films' heroine while filming for the song, though I didn't wear a chiffon sari in it," Parineeti told reporters at the event.
Directed by Shaad Ali, "Kill Dil" will see Parineeti rubbing shoulders with Ranveer Singh, Ali Zafar and Govinda.
For the first time Parineeti is working with Govinda, one of the most entertaining stars of the 1990s, and she finds him "amazing".
"I didn't share too many scenes with him (Govinda) as the film is about two friends - Ali and Ranveer. But yes, whatever scenes I did with him, I realised he is so experienced. He is so cool and he is amazing," she said.

Real couple Kaushik and Reshmi to play husband, wife on screen
The real life couple, who have never played a couple on screen before, will debut as a reel couple with Mainak's film, that also stars Rituparna Sengupta and Swastika.

Kaushik's character will be seen having an affair with that of Rituparna's in the film titled Golpo Oder.

On the other hand, the two will also be seen sharing screen space in Kamaleswar Mukherjee's epic film Mahabharat, where the theatre veteran plays Vidur. However, Reshmi's character has been kept under wraps.

But that's not all. The Sen family's proudest moment had nothing to do with the mom and dad and everything to do with son Riddhi Sen, who is going places when it comes to national cinema.

Riddhi's film, Chauranga, directed by Bikash Ranjan Mishra, was adjudged the best film at the Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image film fest (MAMI '14), the Mumbai Film Festival. And not just that, his film, Children of War by Mrityunjay Devvrat, where he shared screen with Raima Sen, also won accolades at MAMI 2014. "My dad is really proud that Chauranga received the best film title at MAMI. More than me, my dad is happy with the reception I have got for my performance in the two film," said a beaming Riddhi.

TV actors share their Diwali plans
Mumbai: The excitement of celebrating the festival of lights, which is on Thursday, is at its peak. TV actors too are excited about joining the revelries with their families.
Here's what the actors have to say about their Diwali celebrations plans:
Adaa Khan: Diwali is not the same without family and friends. We have a family get together and we will burst crackers, have dinner together, gorge on sweets and play cards.
Ragini Khanna: Diwali is my favourite time of the year. From Dhanteras to Bhaiduj, I love all of it. Sparklers, 'diyas' and the happiness of being together with family fill so much happiness in our lives. I love shopping for new clothes, bursting crackers and also the fact that we get to eat so many sweets.
Amrita Prakash: Diwali, for me, means buying new clothes, performing Laxmi pooja, making sweets and spending time with my loved ones. Every Diwali I decorate my house with candles and rangolis. Diwali is all about celebration and meeting your friends and family.
Rahul Sharma: Diwali is a festival to spend time with family and close friends. I have a small pooja at home and then catch up with family, friends and their kids. We eat a good meal, burst a few crackers and play cards.
Pariva Pranati: I think Diwali is one of the most beautiful festivals. Each and every place is so well lit that it looks heavenly. I love the lights but I am not a fan of the noise or the smoke. I feel we should be responsible citizens and every festival should be taken as an opportunity to do something good for this world.
Barkha Bisht: I really look forward to celebrating Diwali because I relive my childhood memories of it through my daughter Meira. Her excitement and fun adds light to my life.
Siddharth Arora: We have a family get together every Diwali and have fun burning crackers. It is mandatory in our family that all the cousins, from wherever they are, come to Banaras.
Aparna Dixit: It is one of my favourite times of the year. I am very fond of decorations, especially lights. I embellish my whole house with 'diyas', colourful lights, rangolis and flowers during Diwali. I love the whole atmosphere around us. Diyas lit around our colony, the lighting and the happiness of being together with my friends and family is why it makes Diwali all the more special to me.

Anushka Sharma to sizzle in her first item number in Dil Dhadakne Do

Anushka Sharma to sizzle in her first item number in Dil Dhadakne Do

New Delhi: Anushka Sharma is the latest actress to join the long list of heroines who have done item numbers in Bollywood.
We know that Anushka Sharma is playing Ranveer Singh's love interest in the Zoya Akhtar movie 'Dil Dhadakne Do'.
However, what is interesting is that Anushka will be performing her first ever item number in the movie.
Anushka Sharma, who recently wrapped up Zoya Akhtar's "Dil Dhadakne Do" opposite ex-beau Ranveer Singh, will be portraying a never-seen-before avatar in the film.
Sources said the song is called ‘Swing’ and even though some other members of the ensemble cast that includes Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar, Anil Kapoor and Shefali Shah are also seen in the same song; the spotlight will be on Anushka who is performing her first full-fledged item number.
Anushka's character in the movie is said to be quite hippie. She plays Ranveer Singh's girlfriend.
After the huge success of "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara", which was also a multi-starrer flick, "Dil Dhadakne Do" is touted to be Zoya's next big project with a massive budget.
The posters of "Dil Dhadakne Do" have already created quite a buzz among the audience, who are now eagerly waiting for the movie to hit screens on 5 June 2015.
"Dil Dhadakne Do" is based on a Punjabi family who are on a cruise trip. The vacation helps them discover love and friendship among each other.
Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh, who romanced each other in "Gunday", will reportedly play siblings in the flick.
While, Farhan and Priyanka Chopra play a couple, Anushka Sharma plays Singh's love interest. The "Band Baaja Baaraat" couple will be seen sharing screen space for the first time post their break-up.
Zoya's ensemble cast flick "Dil Dhadakne Do" has been shot extensively in Europe, including Spain, France, Italy and Turkey. Some parts of the film have also been shot in Tunisia.
Produced by Ritesh Sidwani, the film is set to release worldwide on 5 June 2015.

From 2D to 3D: How Hollywood Gains an Extra Dimension in India

2d_to_3d_cover.jpg
It's no secret that many of the "3D" films we see were actually shot in 2D and then processed to add the extra dimension. One of the latest examples of this process is Sin City: A Dame to Kill For - the processing of this film was done almost entirely in India by Prime Focus, a Mumbai headquartered company which has offices in USA and London.

The current craze for 3D movies can be traced to James Cameron's 2009 hit, Avatar. Even when people were panning the story, lavish praise was heaped on the visuals and particularly the 3D effects. After the success of Avatar there was a rush to make 3D movies even as cinema halls updated their projectors to support 3D. Making a movie in 3D using specialised equipment the way Cameron did was an expensive proposition though, and turning 2D films into 3D was seen as the next best thing. One of the first films to try and ride this wave was Clash of the Titans. The decision to go 3D came late in the process and the conversion had to be done with a very short timeline. The makers of Clash of the Titans looked at a lot of different studios, and Merzin Tavaria, Co-Founder and Chief Creative Director, Prime Focus, claims they were the only ones willing to do this in 10 weeks.

As it turned out, the rushed worked got a lot of criticism, and a few years later even the director of the movie Louis Leterrier spoke most unfavourably about the conversion. He told the Huffington Post, "It was famously rushed and famously horrible. It was absolutely horrible, the 3D. Nothing was working. it was just a gimmick to steal money from the audience. I'm a good boy and I rolled with the punches and everything, but it's not my movie."
2d_to_3d_tavaria.jpg
Merzin Tavaria, Co-Founder and Chief Creative Director, Prime Focus
Despite the criticisms, Tavaria says that movie studios were interested by how quickly - and at a fraction of the usual cost - Prime Focus had delivered its results. This would lead to getting more work over time, with Prime Focus even playing a part in the 3D conversion for some very high profile projects such as the Star Wars prequels, Gravity, and Guardians of the Galaxy. The company now works on three main services - visual effects (VFX), stereo conversion (2D to 3D) and animation. Conversion remains the bulk of the studio's work, and in Prime Focus' office we got to know more.
From 2D to 3D
In a 3D movie, each frame is shown twice, with a small offset between objects in these. The projector polarises the image, and thanks to the 3D glasses you wear, each eye sees a slightly different image. Your brain combines these into a single, 3D image. This happens automatically, but if the 3D is not converted properly, it can cause headaches and disorientation among viewers.
The conversion from 2D to 3D is a long process that stars at Prime Focus' offices in Vancouver and LA. Each show (what a movie is called in the VFX industry) is divided into reels, sequences, scenes and shots - most movies are anywhere between 2,000 to 3,000 shots. All the shots meant for conversion are then broken down into their separate elements. A cloud-based setup with a Web-login is used to check the notes saved from supervisors based around the world, with instructions for specific shots.
"We don't have to people shouting across the room that something is in the shared folder," says Tavaria. "The moment something is saved it is easily accessible for everyone at any time."

Once the files are in place, employees - usually in Prime Focus' Chandigarh and Hyderabad offices - begin with rotoscoping, a process where animators trace over live action footage frames. This is a very old process used by animators - for example, Disney cartoons would use real footage of animals and people moving to create realistic animation. The same technique was also used to insert graphics and cartoon characters into movies - in the old Star Wars films rotoscoping was used to turn sticks held by actors into the series' famous lightsabers.
2d_to_3d_before1.jpg
In the early days, an animator would have to draw on each frame, one still at a time, by hand. Today, the process is handled by computers, but the process of tracing over the footage remains the same, even if you use a mouse or stylus instead of a pencil.

At Prime Focus, rotocsoping is done on a computer to add outlines to highlight specific elements present in the 2D frame, using Eyeon's Fusion software. We were shown the rotoscoping work done on a shot of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. A computer generated (CG) car is in the foreground and a motorcycle is chasing it in the background. Different parts of the car are marked out in sections called mattes.

"We do only a rough matte for the background," the technical lead on the Sin City project explains. The matte is used to quickly exclude parts of the image, like a mask over the shot. This is the most important part of just about any kind of stereo conversion work, and is used no matter what process is being applied.

"For objects in the foreground like the car, and its bonnet and headlamps we cut out mattes with more precision and detail because they are very clear to the viewer," the lead explains. An object in the foreground gets divided into multiple mattes, because for example in the case of this car, different parts of it will be at different depths. If the entire car was one large matte, then the result would look like a cardboard cutout, instead of a real 3D object.
2d_to_3d_before2.jpg
Once this is done, other employees will take the shot into proprietary software that Prime Focus uses called View-D. Using View-D the shot is then converted in three stages. First, the most basic work is plotting the outlined objects on a timeline. Objects that are supposed to be in-focus and out of focus are identified.

The next stage is the actual conversion. Each matte has a depth value associated and using a series of complex calculations, we end up with two images for each frame - one for each eye. The depth has to be applied carefully to create realistic 3D shapes, and also to ensure that the depth is applied continuously.

The third stage is quality control - after the technicians are finished, someone has to view all the shots to make sure no discrepancies have crept in. "The key lies in subtlety," says the technical lead. "We do not want to give you a headache."

This process looks even more complicated than it sounds. From rotoscoping to View-D to client approval, a single shot can take anywhere between 14-16 days to complete.

Made in India
Prime Focus has built a flourishing business in turning Hollywood's movies from 2D into 3D, and the quality of their work has come a long way in the journey from Clash of the Titans to Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. As we saw, a lot of the work is highly labour intensive - the rotoscoping doesn't happen with a pen and a projector anymore, but each and every shot that is being converted is still being mapped by a person, by hand. A big reason for the success of Prime Focus is that the company has been able to offer these services at extremely competitive prices thanks to of the low cost of talent in India, something Tavaria is only happy to admit.

"Why is an iPhone being made in China?" he asks. "Because it is cheap! That's our strength. We can continue doing work in LA [and] go bankrupt [instead]."
At the same time, Tavaria defends the quality of the work that the company is doing. "It may be cheap but it is good," he says. "We are able to do high-end work here. We spend a lot of time training and getting more experienced."
2d_to_3d_prime_focus.jpg
The added experience has also led to an increase in VFX work, something Prime Focus has been doing for several Indian movies as well. Most recently, it worked on VFX for the Hrithik Roshan starrer Bang Bang. With more Indian films using special effects, we could see a larger VFX industry in India coming up now, instead of it being just an outsourcing hub for American films.
Before signing off, we'll leave you with one insider secret we learnt during the course of this story: next time you are out to watch a 3D movie in a theatre, get the middle seats in one of rows towards the middle of the hall - they are the ones with the best view of the 3D effects.
