Students’ stress: Love in the time of examinations

More and more incidents of school/college romances leading to greater stress in students during exam period are coming up in the city.

We've all heard of students buckling under academic pressure, but there aren't just studies to handle anymore. Relationships - online and offline - have led to an increasing number of cases of stress among students during exam period. Student counselors in Lucknow say that in the last year or two, they have seen a significant increase in stress induced by school/college romances during exams.
As PK Khatri, Head, Psychology department at the National PG College, shares, "The cases of emotional attachment taking a toll on students during exam period has gone up since the last couple of years. Out of all the cases I get for counseling students, 50-60% are of school romances."
Dr Namrata Singh, a psychologist with the Hello Psychologist Counselling Centre, also has similar stats to corroborate the trend: "Of all the cases of stress during exam season that we now get, 60-70% are related to students' emotional attachments," she says, and elaborates, "School romances, and relationships among teenagers have never been a taboo in society. But it is only recently that we have started witnessing a marked increase in such cases. Perhaps, parents are more aware about counselling now, but we can't deny the fact that teenagers are falling prey to peer pressure of having a girlfriend or boyfriend, it is spreading like an epidemic."
LOVE + LATE NIGHT CHATTING = UNDERPREPARED STUDENTS So how does a college romance add to a students' stress? Counselors and psychiatrists blame it on easy and numerous modes of communication available to youngsters these days - from mobile phones to free chat apps and internet facility on smartphones.
Dr PK Khatri says, "With advancements in tech, communication is getting easier. Students, especially those who are in a relationship, chat on Whatsapp till late at night, talk on the phone, remain logged on to social networking sites like Facebook -- sometimes doing those things simultaneously; these things actually distract them from studies during exam period. The after-effect is there is no time left for studies, the pressure of which results in anxiety/depression, making students withdraw from exams."
Arguably, youngsters are hooked to their phones, spending hours talking to their friends/love interest, fighting and making up. "I have cases where I have seen students chatting till the wee hours on their mobile phones; the inadequate sleep and less time for study results in frustration, which adds up to the already persisting exam pressure. Parents bring children for counselling and in most of the cases, they are unaware why their child is behaving in such a way, the revelation about their relationship comes as a surprise to them," says Dr Shashi Rai, a city-based psychiatrist.
Dr Rai is spot on. Sample this: Ankita Pradhan*, a 4th year Law student, who's in a long distance relationship, shares she nearly missed her exam because the night before the exam she had been fighting with her boyfriend. "I had not met him in a long time and initially we had planned to meet after the exams, but he cancelled the meeting just a day before my exam. I was so upset that I could not study for my paper, and after fighting with him on the phone the whole night, I overslept. Had my roommates not woken me up I would have missed my exam," she says.
ACADEMIC PRESSURE V/S PEER PRESSURE Interestingly, the worst affected ones are not those who are already in a relationship, but those who are under immense peer pressure to have a boyfriend or a girlfriend. Like Shreya Sharma*, a 17-year-old, who had to be led to a student counselor after her parents saw tell-tale signs of anxiety and depression in her, "We could make out that our daughter wasn't behaving herself; and with exams approaching, we were really worried by her change of behaviour," says her mother, Simi*, adding, "When we took her to a counselor, we discovered her romantic overtures had been rejected by a boy, and she was depressed because of that. We were shocked... We convinced her to take her exams, but she fared poorly in them."
"They are the worst sufferers - students who are looking for someone, trying to woo someone and when you're young, that can be an all-consuming state of mind," avers Dr Khatri, adding, "Next, there are those students who are nursing a broken heart, they have great difficulty in focussing on their studies; lastly, there are those who are already in a relationship. There is a very marginal difference in the stress/anxiety experienced in all three cases."
DOCTOR'S ORDER So how do students cope up with relationship stress during exams? Or exam stress while managing a romance?
The answer is simple: prepare for your exams well in advance. "In the majority of cases, we find that students are not ready to take the exam, and when we counsel them we get to know it is because they have not done adequate preparation," says Dr Namrata. "We make students understand the importance of time management and recommend them healthy diet with lot of water intake, while asking parents to lend emotional support and spend time with their wards," she adds.
