Movies this week: 'Gulaab Gang', '300: Rise of an Empire', 'The Grand Budapest Hotel'

Gulaab Gang

Somewhere in the Hindi heartland, an ashram of sorts has been set up by Rajjo (Madhuri Dixit) where women armed with axes and sickle and dressed in pink nine yards, mete out the evil and seek out justice for one and all, while making hand-ground spices, hand-woven baskets and hand-woven sarees.

But when the party she was campaigning for reveals its true colors, Rajjo knows she has a whole new battle ahead of her. And a force of evil she hasn`t encountered in the past - Sumitra Devi (Juhi Chawla) whose money, bullet, connection-driven juggernaut of politics is a threat she hasn`t encountered before.

Realizing the devil is soon enough going to swamp and silence and encompass the work she has been striving for all these years, and bring her into a deadlier web of buyout, Rajjo has to battle this new unseen devil. At the ballot box.

With something she has lived to learn all these years the strength of soul, song and stick. This season the color of justice is pink.

Cast - Madhuri Dixit Nene, Juhi Chawla, Divya Jagdale, Priyanka Bose, Tannishtha Chatterjee

Director - Soumik Sen

Verdict - The movie is much anticipated and talked about, garnering positive pre-screening reviews. Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla return to the lime-light and deliver great lead performances. The story-line also touches upon some serious issues and plays them out well. I would suggest you give this one a watch.

300: Rise of an Empire

The film acts as the much awaited sequel to 2006's '300'. The film  is based on Frank Millers latest graphic novel 'Xerxes', and presented in the same visual style as its predecessor, the new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield on the sea as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war.

Cast - Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green,
Lena Headey, Hans Matheson, Rodrigo Santoro

Director - Noam Murro

Verdict - The first film worked because of a combination of brilliant visuals and the intense action sequences. This movie contains much of that, and so should in face be as good. Eva Green delivers a great performance as  Artemisia, and Rodrigo Santoro as King Xerxes is always a pleasure to watch. If the movie is as good as the trailor, you won't be disappointed.

Deepika Padukone Bags 6 Crores Deal With Cola Brand

The resounding box office success of dusky beauty Deepika Padukone's movies seems to skyrocketed her brand value within a brief period of a year. It is rumoured that six crores rupees was her remuneration for the latest ad film she has done with Farhan Akhtar.Deepika recently enjoyed four back to back success that fetched everest-like numbers in box office. Chennai Express, Ram Leela, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Race 2 were those super successes that made Dippy reach where she is, today.

Dippy, already, is the brand face of multiple products but the latest one was a mammotth kind. It is said that her ad film role for a leading cola brand has got her the highest pay check ever in her career. The ad film is directed by self proclaimed messiah of Indian new wave films, Anurag Kashyap, and also features Farhan Akhtar. Dippy is going to be the face of the brand for a whole year. The leading cola brand expects to enhance their fading product image through Bollywood's dream girl's endorsement. When it comes to choosing Bollywood stars for endorsing their product, the company was very selective from the beginning. A source close to the company tells, "The brand has been very selective in choosing its ambassadors. Among Bollywood heroines, they had Aishwarya Rai Bachchan around eight years ago. At the time, she had a successful run in her acting career. After a long gap, they have now signed Deepika."Recently, Amitabh Bachchan said that he stopped endorsing the cola brand because he was stumped when an IIM student asked him, "Sir, Why do you endorse a product which my teacher term as poison." But the cola team had a different version of the story. They went on record saying, " No, Big B's term was over by this year and we didn't think of extending the contract with him."Anyway , it looks like Dippy has a great year ahead!

Shah Rukh Khan: half of my films flopped but I'm still a superstar

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan is happy that he has survived in the industry and is still a star despite having several flops behind him. "It has been an amazing journey till now. It is fantastic time to be here," Shah Rukh said.

The actor said one should not get disturbed by a film's failure. "I have done 70-80 films out of which 50% are flops, still I am star... but those films are close to me," the 48-year-old actor said.

Talking about his favourite film, he said, "My favourite film is Paheli, (followed by) Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani. The film that goes a little wrong (kharab) that should be your favourite and you should be proud of these films."  Shah Rukh feels fortunate to be part of Indian cinema at a time when it is going through several changes.

"There are so many wonderful filmmakers and actors who are edgy and want to take risk, chances and take Indian cinema forward, the extent to which Indian cinema has shifted from just being a trend and fad internationally to becoming part and parcel (there)," Shah Rukh said.

"Bollywood was just a cool word earlier and it was all about singing and dancing... now when I travel abroad and talk about Bollywood, there is a sensibility and understanding of different mode of storytelling which is coming out of India."  Shah Rukh started his acting career with TV shows like Fauji and Circus.

Apart from doing negative roles in films like Darr, Baazigar, and Anjaam during his early days in Bollywood, he acted in memorable films like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Devdas, Swades, Chak De India and Chennai Express among others.
