Mumbai Police to set up a helpline for sexual assault victims

The Mumbai police will set up a special helpline dedicated to victims of sexual assault and abuse. If the victim calls helpline number 103, a woman police officer will go to her house and record the complaint, the city’s new police commissioner Rakesh Maria announced on Wednesday.
“Victims feel uncomfortable to come to the police station in cases of sexual assault. Now their complaint will be recorded in their homes in the presence of their family members,” Mr Maria said while announcing a slew of measures to boost the security of women in the city.
The police are also planning to improve night patrolling and set up mobile patrol vans near girls’ schools and colleges. “The vans will also patrol approach roads to railway stations, temples and shopping areas’. The vans will be exclusively dedicated to women’s security,” Mr Maria said.
In a bid to crack down on criminals, Mr Maria also said that all police stations and the city crime branch will put up a list of the Top Ten Criminals in their area and make a concerted effort to go after them.
“We have decided to go back to the basics when it comes to policing. We hope to boost the street presence of the police through the day,” Mr Maria announced. Patrolling will be boosted in areas frequented by senior citizens. Drug peddlers will also be targeted, especially those near schools and colleges.
Mr Maria also announced that Missing Persons complaints can now be registered at any police station. It will be the responsibility of the police to ensure that it is transferred to the right police station,” he said. The police have been instructed to avoid burking, or not registering crimes to bring down crime rates. “No one will be questioned about why crime has increased. We will be focusing on why crimes have not been solved,” he said.
In an attempt to boost intelligence gathering, anti-terror cells will be set up at police stations. “These cells will work in tandem with the anti-terror squad so we can get tap a wider network of information,” Mr Maria said.
Raj Thackeray meets Maria
Meanwhile the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray called on Mr Maria for around half an hour in the morning. “It was a courtesy call. He usually calls on the police commissioner,”Mr Maria told reporters. Mr Thackeray faces several criminal cases including three cases that were lodged three weeks ago during the party’s violent anti-toll agitation.

Bollywood film fest to be held in Australia
A two-day conference and film festival will be held in the Australian city of Newcastle to celebrate and explore the Mumbai-based Indian film industry. Organised by the University of Newcastle, the Bollywood 101 Film Festival will be opened by the consul general of India in Sydney, Arun Kumar Goel, on Feb 20. The fest will include film screenings and presentations from film producers, while the Bollywood and its other conference at the University of Newcastle will take place Feb 21. The fest will host a variety of speakers, including Indian-Australian filmmaker Anupam Sharma. Filmmaker Vikrant Kishore and Susan Kerrigan, from the university, are the conference convenors. "Bollywood has successfully transcended the confines of India, urging scholars to discuss its global histories," Kishore said in a statement. Australian High Commissioner Patrick Suckling welcomed this initiative, saying that during recent trips to Mumbai and Hyderabad he had been struck by the keen interest of Indian filmmakers in filming in Australia, which is the country partner at the annual Mumbai film conference, FICCI Frames 2014. "In meetings with senior representatives of the film industry, there was unanimous enthusiasm for doing more with Australia, whether by using Australia's world famous locations or cooperating in post-production, including high-end technology such as animation, sound-effects and computer graphics," said Suckling.

Bharti lifts Deepika

TV comedienne Bharti swept actress Deepika Padukone off her feet at the Lux Cozi Zee Cine Awards 2014. Check out the stills.

The roly-poly Bharti, who doesn’t just do the splits like a gymnast but also leaves her audience in splits with her humour, was a riot at the Zee Cine Awards held earlier this month but to be aired on Feb 23.

While presenting the Best Film nominations, Bharti spoofed the ‘Mandir Ki Seediyan’ sequence from Chennai Express where Shahrukh Khan carried Deepika Padukone in his arms all the way up the stairs to the temple on a hill. Spoofing the scene, Bharti lifted Deepika in her arms and carried her from her seat on to the stage.

Soon, watch an HD video sent from moon!

National Aeronautics and Space Administration

This is straight from Ripley's believe it or not. A spacecraft orbiting the moon has an Internet connection with a monster speed if we compare it with connections on earth. In a test, the spacecraft has beamed data via laser at a speed reaching 622 megabits per second to earth! "It worked like gangbusters," Don Boroson, who led the 'Lunar Laser Communication Demonstration' (LLCD) design team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) Lincoln Laboratory, was quoted as saying. NASA and MIT engineers tested the two-way laser link between the moon and the earth for about a month. The team feels this paves the way for 3D video and remote robotic exploration of other moons and planets. This laser technology can also allow humans to remotely control robots for asteroid mining missions. LLCD would begin operations shortly after arrival into lunar orbit and continue for 30 days afterward. LLCD's main objective is to transmit hundreds of millions of bits of data per second from the moon to earth. This is like transmitting over 100 HD television channels simultaneously, said a report in Spectrum IEEE magazine. NASA's follow up Laser Communication Relay Demonstration (LCRD) - scheduled for launch in 2017 - would attempt to establish laser links at a rate of over 1 gigabit per second between earth and a satellite in geosynchronous orbit, which is 10 times closer than the moon.
The LCRD would operate for five years in order to demonstrate the reliability of laser communication technology.
