Mardaani earns Rs 8 cr on opening day, Singham returns stays unaffected

New Delhi: Rani Mukerji starrer ‘Mardaani’ hit the theatres yesterday and according to the latest reports, the film has collected Rs 8 cr on its opening day.

Mardaani managed collections in the range of 20-25 percent on an average, with Mumbai-Maharashtra being better. The film was released in around 1300 plus screens. While the morning show occupancy for Mardaani was decent, it could not pick up much in the evening and late evenings, hence resulting to poor collections.

It is expected that the crowd would increase by the weekend. The collections depend upon the critics’ review and positive words of mouth. Critics praised Rani Mukerji’s performance and her punches.  Released in around 1300 theatres, ‘Mardaani’ is expected to do well in metros than small cities.

In ‘Mardaani’, Rani plays a fearless and daring police inspector Shivani Rao who leaves no stone unturned to bring back the teenage girl Pyaari who was kidnapped by underworld don. The film is about child trafficking, which is quite relevant today’s scenario.

If we look at past, women centric films like Queen and Gulaab Gang, Mardaani has scored more on the opening day. It may be possible that slowly and steadily Mardaani will mark its strong presence.

Similar to Queen, Mardaani may too experience jump over the weekend as the word of mouth spreads. The film is on way to a super hit status, if not blockbuster.

Meanwhile Rohit Shetty’s, Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer, Singham Returns, dominated the box office collection and remains unaffected. It had stupendous opening week of around 112.59 crore. The film also beats Akshay Kumar starrer Holiday.

Here is the seven-day breakup of Singham Returns in India-
Fri 32.09 cr, Sat 21.05 cr, Sun 24.55 cr, Mon 14.78 cr, Tue 8.21 cr, Wed 6.44 cr, Thu 5.47 cr. Total: Rs 112.59 cr.

The other releases namely ‘Mad About Dance’ and ‘Life Is Beautiful’ have opened poor while the giant multi-starrer ‘Expendables 3’ too but unexpectedly has got a poor opening at box office.

Mimicry artist impersonating Maharashtra politicians held in job racket

The Mumbai crime branch on Friday arrested a mimicry artist who impersonated senior Maharashtra politicians and promised jobs to over a dozen aspirants.
According to the police, Rahul Gade (24), who hails from Baramati district of Maharashtra, employed a unique modus operandi. Gade, while talking to the job seekers over the phone, used to pose as senior Maharashtra leaders by mimicking their voices and assuring these aspirants a job at the secretariat.
Gade, who in the past performed gigs at various political functions held in different villages across the State, can mimic Maharashtra leaders like Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar, Ramdas Athawale and even late Bal Thackeray and Gopinath Munde. He also drove in a vehicle fitted with revolving light to impress his clients, the police said.
On 12 August, a Pune-based resident lodged a complaint with the Mumbai police claiming that he was duped by Gade who promised him a job as a Talhati in Pune.
“The accused spoke to the complainant over five to six times over the phone. During these calls, he mimicked the voices of various political leaders thereby gaining the confidence of the victim. He then asked the complainant to meet him at the State secretariat on August 12 and took Rs. 3.5 lakhs from him to get him the job. He asked him to wait outside one of the gates of the building. He then drove inside the secretariat in his vehicle and never returned,” property cell senior police inspector Nandkumar Gopale told The Hindu.
“The victim waited at the gate for a couple of hours. He even tried calling the accused but his phone was not reachable. At last when the complainant made inquires about Gade at the secretariat no one knew about him,” Mr. Gopale added. The police suspect that he had duped over a dozen of people and took around five lakhs from each of these aspirants.
Gade was produced at a holiday court here on Saturday and remanded to police custody until August 25.
