New tech will help ATMs fight back against robbers and vandals

On being attacked, an ATM will release heated foam on the attacker and will also release a dye to destroy all currency notes.
New tech will help ATMs fight back against robbers and vandals
Scientists have developed a new technology that will help ATMs release caustic chemicals to attack robbers and vandals. Researchers from ETH University, Zurich have developed a way to contain hydrogen peroxide and manganese dioxide divided by thin plastic layers inside the ATM. Once force is applied on the ATM, these plastic layers break and the two chemicals mix which results in the release of oxygen, water vapor and heat, in the shape of foam which can go up to 80 degrees Celsius in temperature. Apart from this, on the application of force on the ATM, the currency notes contained in it are also sprayed with a dye and DNA nanoparticles. The former helps make the currency unusable while the latter helps law enforcement track down the notes.
Wendelin Jan Stark, a professor at ETH University said that the research was inspired by the bombardier beetle, an insect that sprays its attackers with a chemical, created with the help of enzymes in its body, that can kill ants and intimidate frogs. Apart from ATMs, the research can also be used to help protect other valuable objects in places like museums and art galleries.
ATM attacks are quite common in Europe and have been steadily on the rise in India as well. According to security reports, ATM theft resulted in losses of EUR 10 million (Rs. 85 crores approx.) in the first half of 2013 alone. Hopefully, an efficient security system like this will serve as a deterrent to criminals in the future.

Sharmila helps bury Pataudi family feud

BHOPAL: A little over two years after she called on the Pataudi family to end its feuds, Sharmila Tagore and the extended Pataudi family have moved close to an agreement over the long property disputes, said family sources on Sunday. Sources claimed a deal to sell Flag Staff House (part of Ahmedabad Palace, residence of erstwhile ruler of Bhopal) could also be formalized.

Tagore arrived in the state capital on Sunday with other family members ready to join her at the Flag Staff house. She was received by Anwar Mohammed Khan, who earlier in March was asked to relinquish his post as secretary of Auqaf-e-Shahi (royal waqf trust).

Coming to the city after 13-years was Sahibzadi Samia Sultan (daughter of Tiger Pataudi's sister Sabiha Sultan). Also in attendance was Faiz Bin Jung, son of another of Pataudi's sister Saleha Sultan. Flag Staff house and a nearby hotel was buzzing with activity.

Sources said, meetings are likely to continue till April 15. "With most properties owned by the Nawabs already sold by Tiger Pataudi, Tagore's powers are limited," said a family confidant. He said that Pataudi family is trying to iron out differences. Discussions are about properties and things of mutual benefit," he said.

Earlier in 2011, after death of her husband Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Sharmila Tagore had told the media about her desire to settle pending disputes. Her husband and his sisters -- , Saleha and Sabiha, were caught in a wrangle over palaces in Bhopal spread over 2,000 acres, also called Sarf-e-Khas.
