Bollywood celebrities choose IIFA over voting
Many leading faces from Indian cinema flaunted their inked fingers at the Mumbai polls today but celebrities like Priyanka Chopra, Anil Kapoor, Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar and Sonakshi Sinha skipped the electoral process to attend IIFA awards in the US.
Actors who apparently left for IIFA without casting their votes also include names like Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone, Madhuri Dixit, Boman Irani, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and Bipasha Basu.
The ones who flaunted or talked about casting their votes were Amitabh Bachchan and family, Shah Rukh Khan, Farhan Akhtar, Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn, Vidya Balan and Preity Zinta.
Farhan, who is hosting the awards night with Shahid Kapoor on April 26, stayed back to cast his vote before leaving for Tampa Bay, Florida, where the four-day-long award ceremony is taking place.
Zinta also flew down from Abu Dhabi to exercise her voting right. Kangana Ranaut and Subhash Ghai took a break from promoting their films to cast their votes.
But there was a clash of interests as IIFA and Mumbai voting day happened on the same day.
"IIFA bound now... Dunno if I'll make my flight! Manhattan traffic really gives Mumbai competition. Can't wait for sunny Florida. Tampa Bay here I come...," Priyanka tweeted.
Sonakshi Sinha's actor-politician father Shatrughan Sinha may be in the fray this Lok Sabha elections from Patna Sahib but the actress is in IIFA.
"Finally made it to Tampa Bay after a crazy 32 hours!!! Thank you for the love," Sonakshi tweeted yesterday.
While Kirron Kher, who is fighting on a BJP ticket from Chandigarh, cast her vote with son Sikandar today, her actor-husband Anupam Kher is in the US to attend IIFA.
"Reached New York. And now Tampa walo! I am on my way to you. Love you all.:) Landed finally in Tampa," Anupam Kher, tweeted on April 22. Kher will premiere his short film 'I Went Shopping for Robert De Niro' at IIFA.
Shahid, Saif, Richa Chadda and Aditi Rao Haidari also left early for the US.
Haidari, clearly perturbed by fans' attack on Twitter, tweeted that she was not a voter from Mumbai.
"Calm down all you aggressive people... My vote is registered in Delhi and not Mumbai...," she tweeted.
Sonam Kapoor took to Twitter today to flaunt her inked finger but her actor-father Anil Kapoor is attending IIFA.
"The madness in Tampa begins," he tweeted with a photo.
Vivek Oberoi, who was campaigning for BJP recently, gave the voting process a miss to attend IIFA.
"Madness at IIFA Stomp! Tampa rocks! Incredible energy and so much love... Thank you for all the love! I feel so blessed and you guys totally rock," Vivek posted on Twitter.

Your first film chooses you: Saqib Saleem
Mumbai: When Saqib Saleem let go of his dream to be a cricketer, it wasn’t because a moment of epiphany had woken him up to a different dream. When he shifted to Mumbai after a modelling stint in the capital, it wasn’t part of a carefully made plan to be an actor.
However, following the age old adage that destiny has its own plans for us all, his life landed him auditions with Yashraj Films. Three films later, as he gears up for his fourth release as a skating coach in Amol Gupte’s Hawaa Hawaai, he describes himself to us as a very lucky middle class Delhi boy. “I had zero contacts, didn’t know anyone and just feel very blessed that whoever called me for an audition liked what I did. I’m sure it works differently for different people but this is how it worked for me. I was audition-hopping for seven to eight months and had come across people who had been around doing the same for much longer. And it wasn’t as if they weren’t talented or good looking either. I was just very fortunate, that’s how I like to see it,” he says.
Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge and Mere Dad Ki Maruti, both young films by fresh filmmakers and Bombay Talkies under Karan Johar’s directorial guidance, where he played a young homosexual… Ask him if his role choices are based on any specific criteria and the actor responds simply, “I’ve grown up watching all kinds of films, from Sholay and Satte Pe Satta to Mr. India, and because I love all kinds I want to be a part of all kinds too. I’m very instinctive in my choices, really. You know that moment when you hear a script and just know that you want to be a part of it? That’s happened with me for all my films so far except my first, because your first film always chooses you and I’ve been lucky that even there I had a great director who put me on the map for other filmmakers,” he says.
Elaborating on the kinds of roles he is looking to do in future, he goes on, “I want to create a mixture of all the different things I can do. Even as an actor I feel that it can be a kind of high if you’re able to do something completely commercial and follow it up with something a little off the beaten track.”
Hawaa Hawaai seems off the beaten track in its own distinct way, revolving around Partho Gupte and Saqib who plays his skating coach.
“I was so moved by the script that I had to do it. It is the story of every dreamer, a story about emotions that urges people to dream big with their eyes wide open. I play a mentor to Partho in the film and Amole sir plays a mentor to me in real life. He’s one of those people who teach you a lot without being preachy about it and I’ve learnt a lot from him. His is a style of filmmaking that is very intimate and personal. He likes to believe in moments and to infuse realism into performances, which I found very interesting. Also, I was so used to being on a lavish set, having a vanity van and make-up that coming to a set where the director doesn’t believe in the concept of vanity vans or make-up at all, was quite a learning curve in itself. Amole sir has this way of luring his actors into his world, which is a thing of magic. I’ve seen him create it in front of me, and it is just inspiring,” he signs off.
Writing for Telugu remake of 'Kahaani' challenging: Yandamuri
Chennai, April 24 : Renowned Telugu writer Yandamuri Veerendranath, who has penned the dialogues and screenplay for "Anamika", southern remake of Hindi film "Kahaani", says the job at hand wasn't a cakewalk for him.
"We were not doing a frame-to-frame remake. Therefore, I was required to rewrite the screenplay and the dialogues because we weren't translating word by word and scene by scene. I have worked on so many films, but I never felt it so challenging to write,"
He says "Anamika" has superseded the original.
"We've added a social element which was not part of the original. This has made the remake even more exciting and I feel it will be better than 'Kahaani'," he added.
Directed by Sekhar Kammula, "Anamika" features Nayantara in the role originally played by Vidya Balan.
Also starring Pasupathy, Vaibhav Reddy and Harshvardhan Rane, the film is slated to release May 1 worldwide.

Asaduddin Owaisi takes on modi in poll meeting
Nizamabad: MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday criticised the Sangh Pariwar for promoting Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and destroying the secular fabric of the country. “BJP and RSS are trying to set up Hindu raj in the country” he said. Mr Owaisi was here to attend an election meeting. Speaking at the meeting, he said that in the 2002 riots in Gujarat, around 3,500 people were brutally killed under the rule of Mr Modi.
“How would Modi being the PM be safe for the country?” he asked. MIM chief rejected the remarks Mr Modi made during his visit to the state on Tuesday. “Modi said that they would need to take a visa to visit Hyderabad, had Sardar Vallabhbai Patel not taken the initiative to merge the princely state in Indian Union. Mr Modi should note that Hindu Raja in Jammu and Kashmir also did not show interest in joining the Indian Union in 1947,” he said. Mr Owaisi said that Mr Modi should remember that who killed Mahatma Gandhi in this country.
