Want to woo youngsters? Depend on youth channels
MUMBAI: In-branding is not unusual today as we see superstars selling the brands they endorse even in their films. Remember Chennai Express and how Shah Rukh Khan endorsed the features of the new Nokia mobile (of which he is also a brand ambassador) in the film. And if you thought it was just him, then you are wrong. Hrithik Roshan starrer Krrish 3 had a host of FMCG products being promoted through the movie.
The phenomenon has not spared the small screen as well. Right from the brands to film stars, the small screen has become a popular destination for promotion. However, this time around there is a twist.
With the nation gearing for the upcoming elections, the political parties are doing all that they can to get voters to get inked. This election season the parties are finding innovative ways to connect with the audiences, especially the youth. And if you watch Channel V India, a youth entertainment channel, you would know what we are hinting at.
The main characters of various shows on the channel can be seen talking about how prices have risen in the past years or how it is the time to bring change. This, while a ticker/astrix runs with BJP’s symbol and message.
The political parties – Congress and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) – both in their mission to woo the first-time voters are now targeting youth channels.
“Youth channels are the best way to catch the attention of first-time voters and since we are using different strategies, we thought of trying this as well,” says a source from the media agency handling BJP’s mandate.
The source goes on to say that it is a “different” way to reach our audience. And, one will see a lot of astrixs and L- shaped advertisements on various GECs as well as news channels till the elections commence.
While BJPs in-branding campaign on shows started last week, the Congress had bought ad-spots on Channel V I almost a month back.
Channel V, itself, through various initiatives, is encouraging youngsters to go out and vote. “This doesn’t mean we support a particular party over the other. These are just commercial deals which we sign with agencies handling the parties. There is no association with any party,” clarifies Channel V India, GM & channel head Prem Kamath.
So, the next time you tune in to shows like Sadda Haq or Dil Dosti Dance, on Channel V, do not miss out on the message from the lead characters to go out and vote.

Congress approaches Election Commission on Nagma's security
Congress has approached Election Commission seeking additional security for Nagma, the party's Lok Sabha candidate for Meerut, after the actress complained of incidents of misbehavior during campaigning.
AICC's legal and human rights department head K C Mittal that "Nagma has written to the party and we have taken it up with Election Commission. We have also written to the Chief Election Officer in Lucknow.
I am also going to meet the officials. It a law and order issue and the local administration should handle it properly." Nagma is pitted against sitting BJP MP Rajendra Agrawal and SP's Shahid Manzoor.
Earlier Nagma said, "I want additional police security as there is a crowd problem here. I have my private security and they can look after me, but who will control the crowd. We are witnessing huge crowds during campaigning. "If something untoward happens, then what? There have been many incidents of pick pocketing as well," she said.

Asked if she is suffering for being a celebrity, the 40-year-old actress replied in the negative. "Not everybody is like that. I cannot say suffering as there are plus and minus points attached to being a celebrity.
I cannot really complain. It's not that I am not getting anything in return. I have the love and support of people, which is overwhelming," said the actress who has worked with superstars like Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar.

On reports that she slapped a youth during an election rally last week when he tried to come too close to her, Nagma said that she was just trying to push him.She also accused her opponents' for creating disturbances during her rallies and meetings.
Asked if she is getting enough support from local party workers, she refrained from giving a direct reply, but said, "Right now, I am just working. I don't have much time left (before the polls) to think who is supporting me and who is not. I am meeting people and holding open interactions where people can question me and I can answer their queries." Reacting to talk that she is a 'parachuted' into the contest, Nagma questioned BJP leaders Narendra Modi, Sushma Swaraj and L K Advani's candidature from their respective seats."If I am an outsider in Meerut then what is Modi in Varanasi, Swaraj in Vidisha and Advani in Gandhinagar," she asked.
She also dismissed the view that there was any Modi wave in the country and said, "I believe in work that has been done and what has NDA done?... They have zero contribution and they talk big while Congress has come out with MGNREGA, food security bill, Lokpal, RTI and many more schemes.
"BJP is a sinking ship and the only man who could revive the whole scenario for them was Modi, (who) is a fanatic, but fanaticism does not work in India." Her priorities for Meerut include reviving the weaving industry and sports and making the city safer for women.
"I will try to revive weaving and sports industry and build an international stadium here. I want to make Meerut safer for women and improve the law and order situation," she said.
On whether her acting career would take a backseat after her electoral debut, Nagma said her priorities in life had changed. "I was offered (tickets) to contest in 2004 and 2009 as well, but was working at the time. This time, I made a conscious decision to contest. People are still offering me films and TV serials, but my priorities in life have changed. "I was never hell bent on being an actress forever, but I will not say that I won't work again," she said.
Manjunath Trailer: It's Hard-Hitting!
Written and directed by Sandeep A Varma, it's a true story of the IIM graduate Manjunath Shanmugham, who was killed for being honest and loyal to his job.
First look trailer of the film is out in stores, and is certainly quite hard-hitting that appeals a lot to the masses. It shows us that how an honest man, who believed in doing his job right, is gunned down by the oil mafia.
The movie is primarily based on the true story of the IIM (Lucknow) MBA graduate Manjunath Shanmugham, who was sales-marketing officer for Indian (Bharat) Oil Corporation and discovered that some corrupt practices are going on at a petrol pump in Lakhimpur Kheri, UP.
Rather than closing his eyes from the oil corruption or getting his hand greased for keeping his mouth shut, Manjunath did the right, honourable and unbelievably brave thing. He took an action on the oil mafia, exposed them with his brilliant wits and sealed the petrol pump. But what did he get in return?
Manjunath is an extraordinary story of an ordinary man, which has a satirical and interesting grab-line: Idiot Tha Saala!
The film features Divya Dutta, Yashpal Sharma, Seema Biswas, Kishore Kadam in supporting roles. The actor in the titular role has been kept well under wraps till now.
Manjunath is written and directed by Sandeep A Varma. The film is made under the banner of Viacom18 Motion Pictures. It is set to release on 9th May 2014.
